I remeber my first knife, it only lasted a week , it was a buck lock back; you know the one we all had with the wood and brass. I used it as a pry bar and the tip snaped off..so then i got a rambo knife, i remember it was like 9.00 . it looked just like john j rambos but was total junk. But it was still fun when i took it after school to our rambo traning course..lol we all used to hang out in a huge 5 foot water draninage pipe that we could walk thru for a mile. It was creapy and we used to bring candles, for light. Anyone else have one of those cheepy rambo wantabees as a kid???

I wanted to get one of those cheapy knives. I saw an ad - in "boys life" or something like that for two for 10 bucks. My dad wouldn't let me get them because he said they were junk. So I mowed lawns for a year (at least it seemed like a year) to save enough to buy my Buckmaster. I think for my purposes I could have done with the 2 for 10 buck version.

My first big knife was a Case XX fixed blade that I got at an outlet store. I learned most everything I know about knives with it, and it still rides shotgun in my WSAR pack. .

Yep the gastly cheepies with the ball compass on teh end of the handle.

My buddies used to make so much fun of that knife, til the day 2 of them fell in a freezing cold creek deep in the woods hiking one day, and the matches in the hollow handle quickly provided a fire.....they shut up about it after that!

I have to admit but my very, very first fixed-blade knife was one of those pos, cheapballcompassinthepommel, garbage "survival" knives :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: :barf: that you used to see frequently advertised in comic books back in the 80`s. I got mine for $10.00 at a BEST discount store back when I was fifteen and incredibly naive. Back then I was just facinated with anything that was shiny and sharp.

Yeah, I got mine through mail-order when I was about twelve or thirteen. I think I paid ten bucks for it. It was your standard bolted-on hollow camoflage handle with the ball compass, sawback spine and a vinyl sheath. I was the coolest kid on the block with that thing.

I sold to the stupid kid across the street for twenty five bucks. The next day his Dad found it and threw it in a dumpster.

I doubt very much if Sylvester Stallone was even born when I was a kid and got my first knife, a Barlow folder, in 1949.

Yup....I still got mine. My Grandfather gave it to me for my Birthday when I was a kid, so....I'm kinda stuck with it. If I'd known then what I know now I woulda asked for one of his old slipjoints instead. Also got several Pakistan Specials he bought me from an auction. These are currently being given to my son for his pocket knives. It's really a perfect arrangement. He gets knives from dad and gets to carry 'em, so he's happy, he will inevitably lose 'em which won't bother me a bit, nor do I think it'll bother Pappy. Actually I'm glad this thread came up. I think I might slap some kydex together and pass ye ole Rambo Especial on to the boy this weekend. (original authentic fake leather sheath is long gone)

Yup, when "First Blood" came out, I already wasn't a "kid." (I obviously wasn't an English major either!).

I went bush with this guy a few years back. I barely new him then but he has since become a close mate. He had been in the army for a few years and done all kinds of survival training etc. This was before I got seriously interested in knives but I still had a good fixed blade (Excalibur 5' - a good solid cheap knife availablle here in oz) and a large locking SAK.

I was amazed when this ex-army dude pulls out a battered, cheap, plastic handled (yes with the compass in the pommell) rambo knockoff blade. He had been using it in the bush for a few years and he used it all week without any problems (mainly food preparation and some making sticks etc - no serious wood splitting). He was stunned at the quality of my knife and bought himself one just like it soon after. I was amazed at how much he had done with this piece of junk.

Yea, my childhood predates Rambo as well. I did have a large, very cheap bowie type knife though. :D

My "uncle," friend of my father's, Tony Maffatone, was Stallone's bodyguard during that period. He has a numbered knife from First Blood and Rambo 2. (You can see his name in the credits for Rocky 3, as one of the KGB guys watching him). He also has a Moran persian. I got to hold them as a kid... he's one of the reasons I collect knifes.
He gave me a Khyber knife, some tourist kukris, and a pair of Burmese dha swords. I was in awe, and I've never stopped collecting since. :D

Yep, I had a two Rambo knives when I was a kid...vinal sheaths, mystery steel, camoflage handles of aluminum or plastic, compass pommel, etc. Back then, I thought I had the greatest knife in the world. Despite the poor quality, they were still fun to play with. I always get nostalgic when I see similiar knives in stores.

My first knife was a rambo knife. I paid about $40.00 dollars. It has a stamp on it that states LifeKnife on it, has 420 stainless steel and came with 2 butt caps A solid brass (heavy) and a compass. The compass is long gone? But the brass cap is on. Knife came with a pretty good leather case too. I know a lot about leather, for I worked in my uncles leather shop for quite some time. He taught me how to read good leather.

Anyways, here is a pic of my first real purchase:
