Anyone have a Sebenza and a Hinderer XM-18

I don't currently own a XM-18 but I did have my hands on one a while ago that belongs to my buddy. I do own multiple Sebenza's. That being said, I think the Sebenza is a better cutter/slicer and the XM-18 is more like a really good looking pry-bar w/ a sharp edge. The XM-18 is much heavier and more stout. I like the weight and cutting ability of the Sebenza (particularly to EDC tasks) so I keep buying them.

Any heavy duty tasks I tend to wear a Busse for anyways (in the wilderness).

Thanks for you input, much appreciated. Good to know. A good looking pry bar.... hmmmmm...

LOL. That sounds worse than it is. It's a fine cutting instrument. But, again, it really depends if you want a tank of a knife that can be put through anything and isn't quite the slicing machine that a Sebbie is. The XM-18's just have a broader edge geometry and the spanto blade grind is simply stout!

Ummmm...pry bar is more than a BIT of an exaggeration, but yes the Hinderer is a bigger, heavier knife with a somewhat thicker geometry. Still slices tomatoes just fine...

I don't have a Sebbie anymore, and find the Hinderer's handle a far better fit, but that's extremely subjective. Both are very well built knives.

Edited due to my "smart" phone having replaced a word I wrote with another that made no sense.

Don't forget the xm's have a slicer grind as well. I love having both seb and xm.

The sebenza is a great slicer, and while i thought the spanto wouldn't be, it cuts just as well. You have a perfect partnership of slim(seb) and beefy(xm).

unless your everyday type task require you to use your knife like a prybar sure, otherwise just use a prybar :/ i don't really understand the prybar questions in regards to small pocket knives though

Okay, I take back the pry bar comment. I agree re-reading what I originally wrote that it's a BIT exaggerated. I believe the Hinderer was built so that it could withstand some prying without losing the tip. The Sebenza isn't a knife I would attempt prying with (not to say it can't do it).

I don't currently have a seb anymore but wish I did. I have a 3.5 xm but find it a bit to overbuilt for my needs. Don't get me wrong the xm is amazing but for edc my vote goes to the seb. You just cant beat the way it rides in the pocket, its slicing ability, how easy it is to clean and the pivot bushing. The last two things in particular have me itching to sell my xm for another seb. But its like everyone says its a personal thing and until you've held both at some point you probably wont be happy lol. This hobby is horrible for your wallet :). Good luck!

Get ahold of me when you want to unload that XM, smitty1505, I think it's high time you financed that new Seb. ;)

I have had many sebenzas and about a dozen XM's over the years. I sold all my XM's except one user that I have kept. I like the XM-18, but it is a different type of a knife to me. Its a flipper, while the sebenza is not. As far as cutting goes, I feel the sebenza with its slimmer blade is a far better slicer. In the end, I always come back to CRK, mainly the Large Regular Sebenza, which is feel is the finest folder ever designed. The best flipper, the XM hands down. Basically comes down to preference and desired use.

I had a 3.5" XM18 Gen3. Nice knife for sure but in the end I ended up selling it on the Exchange. Was really a fun knife to play with but the retention was not too good and it really was just too big for my every day use. Now, I would love to find a 3" non-flipper with a slicer grind and solid retention!

I have a large sebbie and a xm-18. Can't go Wrong with either. The two are really different. spanto grind is tough. Sebbie is a good slicer.

I agree with pretty much that's been said and i still favour my small insingo or 21 rather than my 3" XM.
The slicing ability on the CRks are better but the XM is one hell of an high quality and fun knife to own:)
Those above are my main EDCs:)

I do miss the XM18.... here's an old picture before it went up for sale:

Wow lots of XM owners past and present on here. I appreciate all the input. It does look like a near EDC, which is why I was looking at one.

One aspect I think that is a major turn off right now is availability.

I've looked at almost every dealer listed on Hinderers webpage and almost no one has any in stock. Apparently you can't buy them from direct from the website unless you are a first responder, so that is not going to do much for me. I really can't stomach the idea of Hinderer selling them for $350ish then the secondary market charging upwards of $1000.

Sounds like I will be sticking to an all CRK with a couple useless Bokers diet for now!

Perhaps I'll keep an eye on the exchange.

I just recently got rid of my xm-18 3.5 inch, didn't carry well for me(i wear shorts all the time). But i got a 3" slicer flipper xm and to me it's perfect! I do carry my sebenza way more though, the little xm is a very fun and cool little knife and since it's thinner than the 3.5" it slices a lot better. The xm is a fun knif and im sure if you get one, you will enjoy it!

I have both a LG Sebbie and a 3.5" XM-18... I feel they can handle just about any (cutting) task you throw at either.
I do feel that the Sebbie can get into smaller / tighter places more readily than my Hinderer.....however, i do love the confidence that the Hinderer inspires for the larger tasks... I have a flipper and once open it creates a fantastic choil. For me it makes all the difference when i'm slicing through heavy cardboard or carpeting or stuff of a similar nature. The Sebbie can cut through all of that just fine but i like the grip and control much better on the Hinderer for tasks such as those. Given that, I like the Sebbie much better for smaller controlled tasks.... (it can easily cut heavy cardboard or carpet every bit as good as the Hinderer) but i personally consider it a bit more of a "finesse" knife.
These are my personal observations for my personal knives with my specific ergos :D
P.S. I'm not going to pry a damn thing with either of these....

After owning a bunch of Sebenzas and XM18's I say get the Umnumzaan if you want a knife that merges the best features of each.

Big Beefy Pivot
Thick Blade
Lock Stop
Slices Great
Carries Slender and Unnoticed
Strong Tip (extremely so on the Umnumzaan Tanto)

If you can't decide grab an Umnumzaan, it's all that and a bag of chips, lol!

I agree with what everyone has been saying. Go Sebenza Insingo or Umnumzaan. I have found the best of the EDC world is the Sebenza Insingo variant. It is a little more stout at the tip than the regular blade shape w/o giving up much in the penetrating department. It is also my favorite shape for EDC tasks (i.e. opening boxes, food prep, etc.)
