Howdy all,

Just heard of them recently. Have a 185 weight merino beanie on order... want to see what the fabric is like before I buy any base layers. They have outerwear and packs too.

I am looking for those that have this stuff, and what you think of it. Looks pretty good on their site.

Thanks,
Mongo

gregorio.... thanks for the info on Minus33. They look pretty promising and cost is best I've seen for merino wool stuff. Will have to look into that too.

Well, I at least have a preliminary review of both the KUIU 185 beanie, and the briefest of impressions of the minus33 lightweight polo.

The KUIU beanie arrived in almost a regular sized envelope! Needless to say, I was INITIALLY put off with the thinness of it. Not quite sure what I was expecting though. I immediately started wearing it... which happened to be in Sam's Club, with my eldest kid present. Of course, this was VERY embarrassing to her... so, that was the first thumbs up. I have since come to appreciate it's smallness and thinness. Despite those two things, it does offer a surprising amount of warmth. It easily fits in a pocket until needed. Also... and more importantly, I now have a good idea of what KUIU's 185 base layers will be like. They would make for a superb base layer and even a good hot weather cammo for the Western environment. The Vias (not sure of spelling) cammo pattern is dominated by tans and browns, with a few sage greens thrown in for good measure. If I do get a base layer, it will likely be in either their green or tan.

The minus33 lightweight short-sleeved polo top I ordered is of comparable thickness to the 185 KUIU. I only took it out of the package long enough to confirm the size and that it fits. The sizing is pretty good, I normally take a XXL... and it is a smidge form fitting, but not any more so than alot of my other T-shirts. It is a very light weight layer that would also make a fine base layer in colder weather, and a good stand alone in hot weather.

If I do order more of either brand, it will be in the midweight versions with the idea of them being cold weather insulating garments. In my briefest of comparisons, I think the KUIU may have the slightest of edges in fit and finish. They are made in Canada IIRC. The minus33 is made in China IIRC. Overall, I am a believer in merino wool, and I do forsee myself buying more of both of these. I did find a good source for the minus33 gear at an alternate website with slightly better prices than their own website. If anyone is interested, they can PM me for details.

Have ordered three more pieces... another KUIU beanie, because my oldest kid keeps trying to steal mine, a mid-weight quarter zip top from minus33 for myself, and an expedition weight minus33 bottoms for Mrs. Mongo, because she has a part time job that keeps her outside, and she deserves some proper gear too!
