Anyone have any suggestions?

I have heard nothing but good things about spyderco knives, but I have never picked one up. I just haven't found one that I really like. The spydercoes that I have seen have either too much metal above or below the cutting portion for my liking. The ones with too little look aesthetically bad to me and the others don't look like they would be as useful in a utility role. Does anyone know if I'm missing something?

Which ones are you describing? What do you want a knife for?

The most popular models are the Delica and Endura. You can get these in a variety of steels like H1, VG-10, and ZDP-189. The Delica is a wonderful pocket knife/EDC knife and slices really well and fits most people's hands like a glove.

I am thinking about picking up a spyderco for my edc rotation. The hole in the knife when closed seems like it would jab into my leg when closed and clipped in my pocket

you just mite be one of the 10% of people who just don't like spyderco's! i started with a native 4)its a grate little folder that fits any ones pocket,if you don't mind lockbacks, and the delica would be a vary good EDC also, you will find that hole in the blade is a big plus, hope you find one your looking for.:)

Of all the cool knives I have for EDC, the ones I wind up actually carrying and using are my Sage Titanium and the serrated Cricket on my bar keys (I bartend) for boxes. Love em both. Serious users. That Sage Titanium doesn't tear up the jeans like the blue textured one and is the perfect size for me. Light. Durable. FWIW

I know that they are a very good quality knife. I'm sure if I could get over it and actually get one, I would love it. I just don't know what it is about them. I can justify $145 for a mini grip(Custom handle color and M4 steel in the Benchmade custom shop) but can't seem to be able to do the same for a Spyderco with the same materials

depends on the price range you are looking at.

Under 100$: the Endura & Delica, the LW Manix, slightly beyond that, you've got the Para 2

if money is not a factor: the Techno and Bowie are sweet.

but, they are all good and well designed, simply can't go wrong with a spyderco.

That's never been a problem for me when carrying any Spyderco large or small. Try one, I think they're great!

Clip it so that the hole is against the back seam of your pocket (Good practice anyways because it makes it impossible for the knife to open accidentally in your pocket) and you won't have any problems. What do you typically use your EDC knife for? And what size knife are you thinking about? If we know the answers to these questions we can make a lot of recommendations. I've been carrying Spydercos of all sizes for more than a decade and never felt that any were particularly uncomfortable, and there's an awful lot that carry so well that it would be easy to forget you didn't have a knife on you at all (I never forget however because I always have a knife on me but you get the point).

I've never found the spydie hole to be a hindrance to pocket carry. Like any other knife, overall size and weight is the main factor that makes a knife to big for pocket carry. At least for me. True the spydie hole can make a specific knife a bit taller but if you carry it tip up, the added height fits well into the back seam of the pocket as 3rdGenRigger explained. If anything, the Spydercos with the larger hole tend to settle into pocket a bit better.

I like a heavier folder for my edc knives. For a while, I carried fixed blades exclusively(Buck 119 special and SOG seal pup) and I was told that I couldn't carry a fixed at my work. That's when I sprung for my first real edc folder. I still feel like my knife has to have a little heft to it, so I have been looking for more folders for my rotation. Right now, all I have is a Benchmade AFO 2 with an automatic mechanism. Autos are fine in Oregon as long as they're carried open. I have a mini grip coming in with M4 steel and am poking around spydercoes. It would be nice if whatever folder I carry has at least as much weight as my cell phone. I hope that helps

If you like the heavier chunkier feeling knives definitely take a look at the Manix2 in G10. The Schempp Tuff is even chunkier and beefier and has CPM 3V steel, but it carries surprisingly well for such a chunky folder. I sort of lean the other way with knives (I love my Schempp Tuff and carry it regularly at work, don't get me wrong), but I do prefer a lighter knife because carry several knives, as well as a multi tool, pen, flashlight etc. so a lighter knife is of more benefit to me. The PM2 is close in size to the Manix2, but is slimmer and lighter and carries a little nicer IMO. My most carried 3 plain edge knives at work (I build and maintain communication towers) are my CruWear Millie, HAP40 Endura, and CTS 204P PM2. Closest after that are probably my CruWear Manix, S110V Manix LW, and my Schempp Tuff. They're always paired with a serrated hawbill, mostly a Tasman Salt, and sometimes my Spyderhawk (I carry it less because it's discontinued and would be harder to replace if I lost or damaged it). And as aleforme mentioned, tip up carry also helps hide the hole bulge on the spine in the back of a pocket.

Delica, Endura, or FRN Native.

He stated that he likes heavier chunkier knives...the G10 Native would probably be a better option than the LW version if he wants a knife in the 3" size range. The G10 Caly is probably a better option than the Delica if he likes heavier chunkier feeling knives. That said though, and this is for the OP to consider, you should really try a FRN handled Spydie at some point. They might feel too light to you at first, but FRN is extremely resilient to damage, carries less noticeably, is less prone to slippage than G10 when wet/greasy (Due to the bi directional texturing), and is in my opinion one of if not maybe the best handle material for a user knife.

I like the PM2 and Militaries. I think the beauty of most Spydercos is that they arent bricks. They are lighter weight, slimmer and very ergonomic cutting tools. The full flat grinds are just beautiful cutters.

Maybe a saber ground steel delica or endura or even a police model will float your boat. The Ti Millie is just awesome and is my most recent aquisition. Its got some heft. Ive heard it refered to as a "spyderbenza" and have to agree!

If you like heavy blocky knives then maybe a ZT is more to your liking

I looked up their frn knives and saw that they were doing a sprint run of the burnt orange frn ladybugs. Too bad I don't have $67 to drop on a spydie until next pay day

That and the Ladybug is pretty small. I always have one on my keychain, but it's too small to fill many EDC roles more arduous than an office setting. Ladybugs (And Jester which has the same size handle) on the top right, for size comparison.
