Anyone have any suggestions?

That and the Ladybug is pretty small. I always have one on my keychain, but it's too small to fill many EDC roles more arduous than an office setting. Ladybugs (And Jester which has the same size handle) on the top right, for size comparison.

I didn't realize the ladybug was that small. What's that one in the top left corner. With the brownish blade and dark green looking handle?

If I'm right in guessing the one you mean, it's a Mule Team knife. Spyderco makes a series of fixed blade knives called the "Mule Team" that they sell as blanks without handle scales or anything to keep the costs down. They're all the same shape, size, etc. The only thing they change from run to run is the blade steel. I don't remember off the top of my head what number this run is, but it's the version in K390 steel (Which I like a lot. I'm not the original owner and don't know who made the sheath (It's the leather one at the very top), but I do know that the handle scales are olive drab G10 made by Halpern, and the blade has a light patina induced by vinegar (K390 isn't stainless). There are more than 20 variations that are all identical looking, but made with different steels. It allows people to have a good option to test different steels and compare them to each other more accurately because the blade geometry is a constant variable. If you have questions about any other knives in the picture or want comparison pictures between any combination of them I can take some (If I don't have some already).

I think a G10 Manix would be your best option at this point. S30v, G10, full stainless liners, FFG blade, and the Ball Bearing lock. You can get one for around $100 and if you don't care for it you would have no problem passing it along.

I highly recommend trying out an FRN model first. Pick your poison. The Native 5 Lightweight is pretty hard to beat.

I think that'll be the next knife I buy. I have to wait until the paycheck after my next one. I have to be able to pay car insurance, right?

The responsibility of being an adult gets in the way of knife wants lol. I'm an electrician and we split our scrap wire money every few months and that's always my dedicated knife money. I think you would be well served with a Manix. Like many others have said, the Gayle Bradley 1 fills all of your wants as well. But it is also discontinued so a premium will be paid. And it's a very acquired taste for some. Love mine, but there seem to be a lot of people who had issues with some of the design elements.

I am learning this. I don't regret ordering the mini grip that'll come some in fairly soon. That's why I'm waiting to order the Manix. Surprisingly, the cheapest place I've found it is on Amazon. It's $98.97, so I think that's where I'll pick it up if I don't find a better deal somewhere else before payday. My system is that I have to hold off on spending until I have more money than I need for the upcoming insurance bill and gas. After that, I can spend it as I please

Actually, the version on Amazon looks fake. Apparently many of them came with a dead blasted blade. As far as I'm aware, Spyderco doesn't offer deadblasted manix. I think I'll go with the version from blade hq and pay a little more for the assurance that I'm getting the genuine article

They don't have bead blasted blades. Buy from a reputable on-line dealer.
You may not want to get started with Spyderco. They are very addicting, and difficult to stop buying. They are terrific knives. I have 25-30.
I am grateful that they started "price fixing"(MAP). Now I don't have to waste time searching multiple, on-line store inventories looking for a "sales" or a "special deals" on Spyderco, or Benchmade products. ;)

Thank god for reviews. They can save you from buying a fake knife. Should we throw up the red flag on the Amazon ones?

You're almost always fine ordering from Amazon if Amazon directly is the seller, as opposed to ordering a product through Amazon that's sold by a third party selling their wares through Amazon.

I was doing a random knife search today, and ran into an XL Voyager on Amazon:$144 PLUS $5 shipping! Average price from reputable on-line dealers: $70-$80 (shipping included) I have been seeing this weird random pricing for the past two years or so. Some of these "sports companies" appear to be using some sort of computer program to do their pricing. It is resulting in prices that are double, or even triple the FULL retail price. Buyers beware.

The ones with too little look aesthetically bad to me and the others don't look like they would be as useful in a utility role.

Do you buy it to look at or to actually USE? The knives that are pretty to look at don't always function as well. If you get a Spyderco such as the Manix 2 or especially the Manix 2 XL, they can be pretty tall and take up more pocket space but they work so well that I am more than willing to make that tradeoff. The ParaMilitary 2 is very popular and relatively light and trim. You will find very few people that don't like it. Other favorites that are light and trim are the Delica and Endura. The Manix models are not as light or trim but feel very solid for work knives, as well as the Gayle Bradley folder that people have mentioned. The Griptilian is not in the same category as any of these. I have not carried mine even one time since I started buying Spyderco.
