Anyone have any thoughts on the new Gerber LMF II?

I am curious about this knife. It seems pretty good and not too expensive.
I have held one so I can't make any really assessment of it.
It seems to have some good features.

I hate serrations of any kind, too tactical, I don't like stainless, blade looks too thick, anything described as "skull crusher" starts my gag reflex, looks like a modern USAF pilots knife with crappier steel, I could go on but I think you get my gist.

As a caveat, lots of people carry these types of knives and love them, if you like it and it works for you rock on. Chris

I wish we could have a knife that is either all serrated or not at all. These combo edge knives are a complete waste of effort IMHO. I like a lot of the features of the LMF II, and at $60 I might buy one if it weren't for the CE. You could do worse for the money, but I think you could do better too.

I like it. the sheath is really nice as well.
Primary reason I got it was because liked the idea of being able to use as a spear head/ tent peg hammer.

The liklihood of any of that use taking place however is pretty null..

So, unless you think you will be using it for those features (Spear or hammer), Id save up a few more bucks and get a Swamp rat / busse / scrapyard with Resiprene handles.

They are a money maker on E-Bay.. Lots of people buy them. They used to sell at around 60 but now they are up to about 90. I picked one up early. A bit too tactical for my usage(Window Breaker??) but it is a well made knife.

Man Chris, what have I told you about taking the words out of my mouth! :D

I'm beginning to think that a good, solid fixed blade with serrations can be very useful.

In fact, I just bought one, though not the Gerber. I just didn't like the looks of the handle; didn't seem it would be comfortable.
But many people are saying good things about the knife. If I could hold one, I'd be able to make up my mind in a hurry.

Instead, though, I bought an Ontario TAK 1 serrated in 1095.
Obviously a pretty different knife, but still a tough knife with a serrated edge.
I'm very impressed with my RTAK II, so I felt good about buying the TAK.

I've heard a lot of praise for the LMF II. If they offered it in plain edge, I'd pick it up in a heart beat. I've written a few emails to Gerber but no luck yet.

Not to force my opinion on anyone but...

Take a look at the Ontario Air Force Survival Knife http://www.knifecenter.com/kc_new/store_detail.html?s=ON499 .

I had one and lost it while camping in WVA. Its tough as nails, inexpensive and it takes a good edge.

If given the choice between the Gerber and the Ontario, I'd take the Ontario AFSK's and give the extra $30 to Gerber for a folding/retractable saw and a LST Magnum Jr.

HTH,

Chris

I have one, used some last week, it is tough, I'm sure it can handle what abuse it is given. As with others, I am no fan of serrated blades either. This knife is not really a camp knife but a battlefield knife, so it is built extra heavy, the sheath has a built in carbide sharpener and multi attachment options to hang it on a MOLLE vest.

The Ontario Spec Plus knives are definitely a great value.

Especially the bigger ones.

I too was thinking of getting one to use as a hammer, but when I looked at the butt cap I saw that it is pointy so that it can break through Plexiglass windows. I figured that it would be difficult to use as a hammer because of that feature. Have you tried it as a hammer yet and, if so, what do you think? I may get one after all.

I thought about getting one for a while, but have since shelved the notion. The NWA BFSK sort of filled the spot where the LMF II would have gone. I have handled the knife at shows. It does seem pretty solid and hefty, and like many here, I wasn't too keen on the serrations.

Anyhoo, just about the time I decided I wouldn't get one, I spot this version:

All black, 12C27 steel blade, and a $49.99 price tag. Not too shabby.
