Thoughts? recommend it?

I really enjoy his videos, just noticed he had a book and I much prefer books to videos anyways :D

Appreciate any insight.

I personally wouldnt buy it. That guy is a tool IMO.

Much, much, much, better books out there.

I have 0 respect for that guy.

I'll disagree a little with Jake regarding Dave Canterbury. He has been a little "untrue" on his background which is not defendable, but he is a skilled outdoorsman and while I don't agree with everything he does despite a different philosophy towards survival, I do think he's done some great reviews and demonstrated some unique skills.

As to his book...well, I've heard the editing sucks, it doesn't flow well and isn't a very good representation of what he's really capable of. I personally would wait for a second addition. This is a good example that while you have great books from mediocre "survival experts", you can have the same from the other perspective of a crappy book from a very skilled individual. Putting thoughts, skill and knowledge into print is not an easy task.

Sir,

(He has been a little "untrue" on his background), Please tell me he has not been stretching the truth on his Military background, or is it his Survival background?

The man's broad skills and and knowledge are evident.

Beyond that (from chatter on some other forums), this could get interesting. . .

I don't have all the info, but from the controversy a while back it was revealed that his military background wasn't as robust as he claimed. Several Brigades and Divisions (even Corps sized) often run their own schools locally...they don't produce any certificates that can be added to your military records and I think this is where Dave put a lot of his "credentials". I think that if he would have just stuck with the truth it would have been a non-issue. I've been through both a non-sanctioned RIP and pre-SERE course that were run from my units...they were both excellent training, but since I never went through SERE, I would never put that on my resume. It's really an integrity issue and once you lose it, it's almost impossible to regain...that's the pitfall that Dave fell into to the best of my knowledge. I met him at the Blade Show last year and he was very personable (if a bit opinionated)…I’ll hold no ill-will towards him and I do respect his success; I just think it would have been better if not “tarnished” by building from credentials that weren't officially recorded. I’ve been around the SF crowd and some of the most knowledgeable and skilled individuals don’t walk around spouting their training records, experience or accomplishments. Sure, they’re not in a business where they help establish credibility, but what you’ll often find is the quite professional is the more credible.

ETA that I don't want to take away from the OP, but Dave Canterbury should be able to put together a very good book...he is knowledgeable and quite skilled. Some of his techniques are easily debated, but overall, he does have the experience to share some excellent thoughts on survival...I just don't think this book is it.

(+1) The man has blatantly ripped off ideas and then passes them off as if they were his own :barf: (give credit where credit is due)

I tried to give him the benifit of the doubt in the begining, but Ive heard of some really irresponsable things that happen in his classes, and with the discredit to his service backround, and being caught up poaching that just does it for me. 2 things Im very strongly against.

He seems to have some outdoor skills, but I know alot of other guys with outdoor skills Id rather support.

Nope I do not have it. But I would take a look through it if I had the chance to.

As Rocks6 said Daves back ground from what his service record really
shows different than what he says.

I have it. It's short and low on content. There is nothing there that is not on the YouTube videos. The editing sucks. Stick with the free YouTube videos.

I have his book, autographed copy. But, like others have said, the editing is not that great. There is some good basic information in it. Good for someone wanting to put together a bush/ survival kit for the first time. Really there is nothing there that my SAS survival guide does not cover.

Gotta agree, I have it and the videos that go with it. Both are kinda low on quality and not much info. The last half of the book is filled with half pages of pics. and text. Sort of like the were trying to make it appear more filled then what it was.
6 IN 12 OUT still is my go to.

I'm glad you posted this J. Guys who lie about military background and such really bug me. I haven't bought any of his goods and I definitely won't now. :thumbdn:

I don't buy stuff from people I don't respect.

It might be a GREAT book, but I am willing to bet all of the material is easily found elsewhere. There are plenty of other survival authors with integrity whom I would rather support.

I picked up Cody's "98.6 degrees" book, but my few glimpses of Dave on the show pretty well turned me off. Hearing about him puffing up his history only confirms what I already thought so thanks for the heads up, guys.

Too bad about the negative info, Despite his bluster on dual suvivor, I sensed a decency beneath it. I had thought about reading his book, and had looked at his school.

I don't know much about Dave Canterbury's background but he's always come off to me as someone trying to create a niche and turn it into a pay check. I guess you can hardly blame someone for that.
When I first saw Dave's YouTube videos he was demonstrating survival skills with traffic noise in the back ground, now he's on TV, how did he do that anyway?
When it comes to wilderness survival, there are so many established, easily identified experts to choose from that there's really no need to pursue individuals whose credentials need to be verified.

Nothing with the DC here, but some people can't get far enough away from roads all the time to not hear traffic. Most of the time I am in a woods I can hear traffic. (woods behind my house) Even shot a deer when I could hear construction work not to far away.
