When I worked on the slabs of the "HI puukko", otherwise known as the JKM-1, the tang was roughly forge-finished with somewhat irregular, unfinished punched holes for the pins. It had not been ground flat, and the pins were aluminum.
I ended up sanding sides of the tang flat, cleaning up the holes a bit and used material cut from a brass bolt to replace the pins.
Gives one respect for the laha when properly used (slabs had warped on this knife), as there wasn't a tight fit between the orginal pins and the tang.
On the larger khukuries, things may be done differently, but I'd be sorta surprised.
