Anyone have steel? Stock removal

Well Page, I appreciate the info. I will see what I can do.
Bladsmith, I will try the google thing... I did not think of that. I think the search function should be available to non paying members due to the fact that we are usually new and rather than reposting things that have been posted or asking questions that have been asked it would save the pros some time and agrivation. IMHO
Scott, I know I post alot and ask many questions but I have a little OCD which causes me to over think things a bit. Now that I know how to search the forum I will not have to ask so many ???, I will be able to answer them for myself.
I am an admin on another forum, I will post it here at some point.

Thanks again gang for all the help, You will see that it is not in vain and one fabulous knife will come from all of this!!

I think the deal with that is it was taking up too much processor power, and Spark had to make some cuts somewhere, besides, the search didn't work nearly as well as Stacy's google.

Keith, a Basic membership at Bladeforums cost $10 per year. That allows one to use the search engine and have PMs to communicate backchannel. I use the BF search engine to find threads or posts I remember from past reading. When I want to learn about something that requires a search "string", such as "clay coat hamon", then I turn to Google.

I fail to understand your attitude that the search function should be available free to the people who need and use it most, putting a burden on the capabilites of the infrastructure. It costs money to maintain this site. I have to admit I have a hard time understanding how a newbie wouldn't consider the value of the information they receive here worth $10 per year. Indeed, any knifemaking book would cost them 2-3 times as much. Here, they get the opportunity to ask questions in an ongoing fashion and get answers to specific problems and frequently a variety of possibilites, something they won't get in a book. That minimum $10 goes to help continue funding this site, to keep it open, and to provide for the continuing expansion of hardware necessary to meet the ever-increasing influx of new people seeking to learn and be part of the community.

It's a pretty good investment in a knifemaking education, and that learning source should be worth something.

I'm with Mike on this. The reason I have a platinum membership isn't for some great benefit that comes with that level, it is a way to add extra funds to the site so it can stay the best knife site around. I encourage all to subscribe and pay the minimum, or get a knifemaker membership (even if you haven't made a knife).
Stacy

I never said it was not a good investment, What I was trying to say was that I think or thought it should be an option available to everyone. This is so people ne to the forum or knifemaking can avoid asking questions that are already answered. Not trying to ruffle any feathers, it is just the way I felt. I have no idea that it takes more money or more resources to offer the search function. I belong to many forums and usually have search available. I was thinking it would help more than hurt. I have learned alot from the site and enjoy coming here and planned on getting a paid membership regardless.

Look, I do not know how the infrastructure of a forum such as this works so I offer my opinion and we all know about opinions. Kid of figured that the paid mamberships were geared towards sellers that's all.

Anyway, thanks for the insight Page, you always have good advice. I am going to place an order for steel tomorrow, I will keep you posted.

Keith, there is a sticky at the top of the forum that says, "Search functions are down for non-paying members". (I'm sure, since you are a member of so many forums, that you know to always read the stickies at the top.) It explains that the servers are overloaded by the largest function...searching, so it needed limiting. The forum was experiencing repeated "Too Busy" errors for everyone when trying to log on. Something had to give because the computers were at limit. So, guess who gets limited? Those who have a free ride, of course.

Bigger servers necessitate more income before they can be purchased. So, no matter how nice it would be to have otherwise, it becomes pay-to-play until enough income gets generated to upgrade the infrastructure.

Hey Mike, you know what they say about honey and vinegar?

I usually read the stickies but that has no bearing on this at all..... I was offering my opinion. I have no clue as to why this is such a sore subject for you. I am a nice guy but I get the feeling that you are being a little testy with me because you did not like the fact that I made that comment. You made a statement that the people getting a "free ride" are the ones to get limited, I honestly think that could have been worded a bit better. Free Ride insinuates that the non paying members are somehow getting more than they deserve. if I tell someone that they are getting a free ride this is how I usually mean it anyway.

Now don't you think it would have been easier and more pleasant to simply explain why the search function is limited leaving out the sarcasm? I am no child and as I stated before I was simply stating what I thought may be a good idea for the site, it should have been taken for what it was. Not a dig, not a complaint but an idea.

So, you have made it painfully clear that this is a bad subject and i will not bring it up again... I know that until I pay I am getting a "free ride" and shall keep my opinions to myself.

Anyway............

I am going this weekend on a mission for steel. One place I am going is the scrap yard that is down the road. maybe I will find a nice anvil.

Is there anything I should look out for as far as knife steel in the scrap yard??

Keith, I have 2 pieces of precision ground O1 3/16" x 1 1/4" x 36". If your interested send me a email. Jeff

Kieth,

My name is Aldo Bruno. I live about 45 Min. from L.I. City(If the GW isn't backed up.) I forge most of my blades.

I am in the shop Sunday Afternoons and every other Saturday. If you want to stop by I'd love to have you. In the future, perhaps, I can introduce you to Joe Szalaski. He is a master smith who lives about an hour from here in NY state and I know he'd be glad to have you.

On the 22,23 and 24 of Feb is the NY Custom Show. If you like I could meet you there and I could introduce you to a whole bunch of people. It's not always what you know but who you can call to find out!

I've got a friend coming over this weekend who teaches knife fighting. We are going to design a fighter for him and his students. Should be a lot of fun. It will probably be a stock removal piece. If you want to be a part of that call soon! We are going to try and finish it in "1" day. From bar stock to heat treated and maybe a cord rapped handle to finish it off.

Aldo Bruno

PS- I've got loads of O-1.

E-Mail me at njsteelbaron@gmail.com and let me know.

Aldo, that is sweet of you man, I would love to be able to actually learn from someone who knows what they are doing. I sent you an email and hope we can get together soon, This weekend i am looking for a house and will be busy but I would love to schedule something soon. The show sounds awesome too.

There are still good people on this planet!! Thanks again brother.

That offer will inevitably turn out to be worth its weight in gold....errr steel...... hold on, when I think about it, GOLD  I can't imagine what it would be like to have the opportunity that's been presented to you. I predict that you'll either take advantage of the offer and learn first hand "from someone who knows what they are doing" (major understatement my friend) or...... pick up a magazine sometime in the near future and kick yourself in the head ;) If you want to learn how to make knives here's your chance, Lock,Stock & Barrel. Good Luck Keith

EDIT to add : Scrap looking for a house for a few months, thats what tents are for :D ;)
