The Buck Vanguard and Buck Alpha Hunter? I am wonder which would make the beat all around Hunt/Camping knife between the two.

BTW Is the Omni hunter fixed blade about the same blade as the Alpha Hunter? I might have to try the Buck forum but I thought I would inquire here first.

+1 for the Vanguard. I`ve got the Bass Pro version with the 3 1/2" blade, it`s a good size.

I had one but I sold it some time back. Probably to buy a JK.:D I have been looking at the new line of Bucklite Max large hunter, it looks a lot like the Vanguard but about 1/2 the price and still USA made and 420HC Blade. I have always liked the looks of the Alpha Hunter but It is not really a Bushcraft looking knife.

In my opinion the Vanguard is Buck's best looking knife. Had a friend that used one, it was nice. Don't care for Buck's steel much though.

I love Bucks steel. In My experience it offers a nice mixture of edge holding abaility and ease of sharpening. It offers a pretty good dollar value IMO. Just a good working mans knife. I might as well get both and get it over with.;) I also admit to really liking SS.

IMO the Vanguard is one of the best blade designs out there. Only thing I really don't like much is the hollow grind. But I think it was designed as a game prep kniofe, not something for bushcraft where drilling and notching may damage the very thin edge. However, for game prep, the very thin edge makes skinning a breeze. 420HC is a good steel, and great for those who aren't knife nuts and don't want to put in the upkeep that carbon steel requires.

Or for some of us that are knife nuts but still like a few knives that we can use hard and trow it under the seat in the truck for a few months at a time. Real forgiving users. I can with good conscience recommend to a fellow hunter/camper to buy a Buck knife. I have never been disappointed in one when all things are considered. Convex that edge and it will hold up to quite a bit of hard use. IME

I had the omni hunter & it was a good knife for the money, full tang & made in the USA  If you like Bucks 420 steel then go for it !

I like Buck knives. Owned them for years, in fact my EDC and favourite small folder is an Alpha Dorado in 154CM (also have one in 420HC). Because we all like pictures:

However, IMHO, the newer style sheaths completely suck, including the one for the Vanguard, and sheaths are a big part of the package to me.

I usually make my own sheaths. Although I see some More JK kydex sheaths in my future.
