Hi Folks,

Have an acquaintance who asked if I knew what a "lohar" was - here's his description :

- Do you know anything about a ''lohar" made in India? Not a tourist crap knife, but a 3 piece folding one, hand made with a bone handle and a bill shaped blade? About 13-14 inches overall. -

I haven't seen it and can offer no other description, but I can get details via email.
Would appreciate any information or feedback on it.

Thanks!!

are you shure about the name or must this be "lahore"? This is the name of a part of india and i think that it may be possible that a knife is named like the place where it was made.
Just wondering.

Achim,

Hi!

That's the spelling as it was given to me, but a Yahoo search of "lohar" shows it as a proper name or place in India, so I think you are right about it being a regional knife. That's what I'm going to pass back to my acquaintance - thanks for the input.

Hi Friends,

"Lohar" is the name of an actual weapons used by the Afghans. It is shaped like a pick (much like a Japanese/Okinawan 'Kama') and it can fold for convenience. See Stone's 'Glossary,' s.v. 'Lohar;' there's a picture of one there.

Glad I could help, though I'm anything BUT an expert: I just have books WRITTEN by experts, that I keep close at hand!

I'd never heard of Lohars until about 2 months ago, when one was being sold on eBay by Oriental-arms. I was going to bid on it but, as usual, the bids went beyond my humble budget... )-:

ruel,

I should have 2 pictures of it today or tomorrow, perhaps you could take a look and tell me if it's the same as what you were interested in. I'll post the web addresses on here later

My acquaintance notes, "Lohar is an (east) Indian word for iron ...also used as 'blacksmith'....Perhaps it comes from the border around Afghanistan?" He was also curious as to the value/worth of such a knife. I do not know if it is for sale, though.

Thanks for the help all, and thanks for permission to post the pics Uncle Bill!

That looks virtually the same as the eBay one. One thing that stands out to me is the decorative motif of concentric circles, with the inner one colored in. It's all over this Lohar, was on the eBay one too, and also is on my little tourist Khukuri. I wonder if it has any significance?

That is one of the oddest most unique weapons I have seen. I wonder why they never made one of these in Japan.

They did use folding sickles as weapons in Japan (the kusuri-gama is a chain about ten feet long with a folding sickle at one end and an iron ball at the other -- one of the stupidest weapons ever invented), but not three piece like that one. I've never seen a three piece folding sickle before.

1st time to know it - TQ!

Anyhow it doesn't looks like a knife - a sickle maybe! - I don't think it is proper to classified it under knives category!
