I am using leather die on my light woods and want a die made for maple. Someone told me of majic maple but I cant find anything.
Thanks for the help,
Brian

You talkin' about the stuff RWWilson sells? If so, it's actually a chromic acid mixture. Gives a very rich walnut color. When applied, it's a bright orange and as it dries turns brown.
Lately I been applying it then going over top with JohnRichards Walnut oil finish. Gives a little different effect. Both good products. bruce

I knew you'd have to have heard of it :) Looks like I need to get some......is it applied like a stain?

Thanks fellas

I bought a quart jar in dehydrated flake form from sciencelabs.com I think. Cant remember how much it was. $30 or so with hazmat shipping.

I use a small one ounce plastic cup and put roughly 1/2 teaspoon in with 3/4 ounce of distilled water. Disolve and brush on with a disposable foam brush.

Let it sit on the wood till it gets dark as you desire.

I use white vinegar on paper towels to wipe it off well until no more comes of on the wet towels.

Let dry , add your favorite sealer .

Admire the chatoyance.

Use rubber gloves and be very careful B~, it's nasty stuff.

Brian,

From Muzzleloader Builders Supply, Catalog 11-A:

Magic Maple Stain

This is an acid stain especially formulated for curly maple. One of the best, but first-timers be careful. ...it does a great job on your curly maple.

4 oz.-$4.00

I always just used Aqua Fortis, and have had the results I wanted, but I've seen some really nice looking finishes done with non acid stains, also.

There are
lotsa variations to the procedure. I have a friend who builds muzzleloaders full time and he gave me some tips.
First use a red mahogany stain, sand the nibs , then apply the majestic. Gives ya a deeper color.
The chromic acid should be neutralized in some way.
The acid doesn't actually stain the wood. There is a chemical reaction with the cellulose to give the brown color. bruce

Todd, try putting that link in again. It isnt active. Thanks for the help fellas. I have plenty of maple to use :)

Dixie Gun Works sells chromium trioxide. If memory serves me correctly (an ever increasing rarity), I bought a small jar (2 oz?) of the flakes for about $8 plus a couple more for shipping.

The stuff works GREAT! But beware---it will stain just about anything it comes in contact with.

Mike

I believe that's the stuff that Roger Massey uses on his awesome maple handled knives. Makes the maple look, well, like magic. ;) :)

Brian,

I'm sorry about that. That was an old catalog, and their website doesn't list any finishing supplies anymore. Mike is right about Dixie Gun works having it, though. It's listed as Chromium Trioxide and sells for $6 for a small container of flakes. Dixie has several options in thier catalog for finishing curly maple, and you can get them from their website at www.dixiegunworks.com.
