I was googling to see some Aussie bushcraft stuff when I found this - http://www.the-firestarter.com.au/
I've heard many people talking about gluing fatwood to a ferro rod. This seems okay and has magnesium and the striker looks reasonable.
Good buy?

Edit - Just saw the price... seems a little pricey.

Have seen them often here in New Zealand. To me it just seems like a really pricey ferro rod. Me, I'll stick with my $2 Bic lighter.

I saw them for the first time a month a go, didn't see the price but thought it was quite bulky for what it was.
I like the idea, not sure I'd have added so much wood.

Yeah they sell them in every camping store I've been to in Western Australia. Haven't used one though. I bought a light my fire army model from the US instead. Better bang for your buck imo.

they arent bad for what they are, and here in aus they are about the same price as a magblock/ferro rod or swedish firesteel
they seem to work ok and have both a flash tinder and a slightly longer burning tinder in one block ,i havent really tried it under challenging circumstances

here is a pic of magblock, thefirestarter and the small (scout?) model firesteel

all three ferrorods have been painted with nailpolish to prevent corrosion of the Ferrocium, the wood and magnesium rod on the middle one have also been painted to stop it getting wet

Dosen't look to bad but does seem a bit bulky, If you can afford the space it might be alright,But i'll stick with my plain 2 1/2 inch, no handle, no wood/block ferro rod and use the back of my knike as a striker.
