A guy called Tomek Nowak, from Poland, has sent me an email offering bayonets for sale, hesay's he got my email from a militaria website...not sure which?..Anyhow, the price he asks is good and fair, however, I'm not sure that i can trust a private sale from overseas, with a person i don't know. It SOUNDS like a genuine offer, but how could i arrange postal insurance, buying an item from Poland, sent to Australia wher i live ? Any ideas? Suggestions?

Sounds like phishing to me. Others have much more experience in determining phishing schemes, or real sales pitches. I haven't had any trouble with international sales, knock on wood, but it just sounds fishy. If you haven't made contact with him yet, wait a while.

I would avoid it like the plague. There's a guy named Pavel Novak or something like that who frequents various sword fora, collecting email addresses and trying to sell "papered" katana for ridiculously low prices. It's a scam plain and simple. I don't know that it's the same person but the name and modus operandi seem a little to close to me. My advice: give it a pass.

My email is all over the net and I get spam by the megabyte. Many of them have some vague explanation how they got my email address. The spammer might have bought a mailing list of people who have shown some interest in militaria, but it's more likely he's spamming a general list. He doesn't care how many people who don't post on militaria websites and aren't interested get his spam. The recipients are the ones who pay the cost of spam.

Of course the price sounds good, but spammers are not honest. If you send him money he might not send you anything or he might send you junk; he certainly won't send you your money's worth.

Hey Triton, yep, Pavel Novak, same bloke, he's emailed a lot of forum members on the BCN Bayonet Collectors network, and apparently ran the same scam a couple of years ago!

Interesting to know that he's branched out from selling non-existent katana to selling non-existent bayonets. Caveat Emptor.
