i think you'd have to take a nasty shock to break your ribs, and you'd KNOW it. plus the grating of bone on bone is something you are not likely to ignore.
possibly, you popped or relocated a floating rib... i've done this, and then you get a pinch of soft tissue, and it hurts to move. also done this. so has a friend that i "remotely diagnosed"...
the cure? well, nothing spectacular. take a slow maximum deep breath. "hold" your breath, and sharply "push" hard, slow sometimes slowly does it too, but PUSH. like you are blowing a balloon, but do not exhale. push push push. for me anyway, it pops it back, instant relief.
though, if you broke a ripe, or did something else... see a doctor
