Howdy folks! It seems that I've developed a thing for small fixed blades (i.e. no bigger than 3"). I've gotten one from James McGowan (awesome blade!), I'm getting one from Ron @ Little Hen knives that I ordered with my LHK, I've got a special one-off piece coming from Gene Ingram (looking forward to that as well), and now I'm looking at the small skinner (H7) from Mr. Tichbourne. I know that his knives are held in high regard here, but I'm wondering about this model in particular? Anyhoo, 3/16", 440C (one of my favorite steels), and a small package seem to spell out a winner. Comments?

Sincerely,
Anthony

Had mine for 3 weeks so far, been meaning to get a review online.

Handle is a nice balance, mine balances JUST in front of the front pin(I got 2 pins on mine instead of the tube), between the size and weight, once you find a comfortable position for grip it's very familiar and comfy. Almost weightless in use(I cook with mine).

2.5" blade and same range for handle gives FULL tip control. Index along the spine on the filework, and you KNOW where the edge is at all times.

Handle is thick and fat, great for my long skinny fingers.

Sheath rides tight to your belt, and once you figure out the direction for draw and replacement(rolls back in) if very nice for use.

Looking at getting an H5 when I have funds again. His prices are very reasonable for the excellent quality. My only problem is the finger prints I keep leaving on his mirror finish.:D Expect a solid "heavy"(for the size) knife.

I've got a custom from Ron Leuschen, Skean Dhu done full to spec from a sketch. I carry it on weekends, don't need 2 fixed for work. If I had my taste of Tichbourne before going with Ron(he's close here, about an hour drive), I'd have bought 2-3 tichbourne's with that cash. Also have small fixed from Will Leavitt(BadBamaUmp in here), underpriced work.

edit: forgot steel comments... The tichbourne lasted a week on his edge until I went after cardboard at work. Got 2hrs of a slow shift done with it before it didn't shave. Touched up quickly with spyderco whites and my strop, 2 weeks later it still shaves.

VampyreWolf, Thanks for the response! About the sheath, what kind is it (i.e. Kydex, leather, ...)? That has been one of my biggest questions. How do you find the quality? Oh, and how has the knife from Ron treated you? I'm anxious to get both of mine. I ordered mine during his Christmas sale, and have yet to get them, but Ron tells me that they'll be started soon.

Sincerely,
Anthony

Both are leather.

Ron's has a seperate loop sewn on, and was REALLY tight for about a month. Talking 2 hands. Single peice of leather with a welt sewn in.

George's work is the loveless style pouch, loop is part of the backside itself. Only hard draw was the first since he ships with a plastic film over it all.

Going by the package I recieved for both, Tichbourne was above there too... highly padded, hints and help paper(and a single card), plastic film over the knife in the sheath. Ron's was a padded envelope with 5-6 cards in it.

The LHK is 5160, requested it myself. It takes and holds an edge that goes through 1/4" yellow poly rope at work. Ordered mine back last fall before he went hunting, got it right after new years. Ordered the one from George and somehow timed it right, he was sending 2 off for HT that week. Took about 2 weeks from that.

I have always considered that one a very job specific design, does the job of skinning very well but is not designed for any other purpose.

George>

Did cardboard all right... sails through 1/4 to 1/2" poly & seatbelt material...

cook my food with it, just doesn't have the length to cut a 14" pizza.

You will not be dissappointed with any of Georges knives. I have a Wood Century and his Small Military model. The Century is flawless, and I have yet to see a mirror finish as good as his. I just got the Military a month or so ago ans have not had much blade time with it.
Don't hesitate. George and Carol are amazing people to deal with. The prices are great too. Sheaths are excellent leather craftsmanship. Sorry for gushing but George's work is impeccable. Take Care!!!

Thanks for all the replies! I'm very close to ordering the mini-skinner. Matter of fact, I'm just getting the last ducks in a row. Wanted some pretty burl, but now I'm thinking of going with the ironwood. Anyone have any stories to share about ironwood? Thanks, again!

Sincerely,
Anthony
