I'm not sure if this should go in general knife discussion, but it is directly knife related, and knife laws didn't fit because I won't be offering any useful legal info... So, sorry mods if this is wrong please tell me..
So.. I was walking home tonight and saw someone getting arrested and put into a car by a few local officers and I started thinking, which is always a mistake. I guess by high school years have been in my thoughts lately, and I was something of a reckless driver (with a beat up but quick '66 Porsche 912) and I thought, what if I were to be searched right now, as I was when I was ticketed for speeding some 8 years back (it was a strange situation). Tonight I was carrying my Para 2 in my right front pocket, clipped, a SAK in a belt sheath, and a case med. stockman in my left pocket. There is also a SAK classic and a spyderco ladybug on my keys and a swiss card type thing in my wallet. and unusually, a Sydie bug around my neck. More than usual, but not by much. SO with 7 knives on me, and more blades and scissors.. what would a police officer say if I were searched? I have nothing to hide, and am breaking no laws. I also respect what officers do, but I can't help but think it might be a problem, or concerning to the officer, to find someone so armed. I stopped carrying a fixed blade because it made people uncomfortable in my neck of the woods (silicon valley) and it's a no go on the bus anyway..

Sorry for a long winded and perhaps absurd statement, but I got home and immediately thought to myself, "I bet the guys on bladeforums have some interesting stories on this one". I know if I had a car right now I'd keep a fixed blade, a folder, and probably a bug out bag of some kind as well. Am I crazy, or do I just really like knives? Am I a jerk for posting this topic? If so, please tell me, I will keep my mouth shut, in computer language, but I figure if anyone has advice or a story, they would probably be here. SO...

Not really an interesting story but I recently had to jump in a lake where I live to help a person that had fallen unconscious out of the water, when that was over and me and friends got back to the cabin and I ditched the wet clothes they gave me funny looks when I started drying the 6 knives that I had in my pockets and had gotten wet. (AG Russel sting a1, fox karambit, leatherman, sog trident, some little buck, and rescue hook) To me, each one of those knives serves a purpose, and I can comfortably carry them all so I do, I don't see anything wrong with having that many.

Sounds like you might well have saved the person's life, that is more than interesting, very glad you were there and prepared, sir!! I too get weird looks from my friends when I get home and many questions when I visit my parents and they see on the dresser that I bring near 10 knives for a few day's visit:)

really, TNMoparguy, glad you were there:thumbup:

A child got arrested for burping in class http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/headlines/2011/12/student-arrested-for-burping-during-class/ so its safe to say knives can get you further than that.

I live in Canada and the last time I got searched I had a single knuckle duster and a SAK,I talked my way out of it,no tickets, pretty much all due to me and the officer having similar sports backgrounds and me explaining that its not for hurting others but defending myself if need be.
It will all boil down to a clean record, your tone and body language, confidence, the kind of weapon/tool (dont expect them to listen if you have a sawn off with a trench knife, thats not protection, unless zombies...) and what you got searched for,if its random with no cause I believe anything they cease cant be used because they didnt have a cause or warrant, dont quote me on that,im not 100% sure especially since Canada and America are different and you guys are getting worse and worse with laws and the ability to take whatever little freedoms you have left,NDAA is intense.
Dont get searched, try not to carry anything too scary because most cops are on a powertrip, stressed and some are unstable due to the line of work,so keep that in mind.

I don't think most cops would consider a person carrying what you were as being armed, just obsessed with knives. I also think they would agree with me that there is no such thing as a quick 912. :D

easy now, 2 shot, I'm sensitive. That 912 had a 2.2 with Webers from a '72 911 and the 5 speed to match. near 200 hp in just over 2000 pounds. Quicker than my father's 993 up to about 95-100. Not really a 912, I guess...

With all that on you, and since you're not breaking any laws, I would hope the cop would say the same thing one asked me... Why so many? I said they all have different uses.

Normally I have with me 2 fixed blades in my truck, on with a 4" blade and the other is a machete. Can't cut down shrubs that are in your way when off the asphalt (not that I go wheeling anymore). I'll have at least 1 on me at where ever I go, unless strictly prohibited (court houses and such). 2 or 3 others depending on what I'll be doing, my folder and perhaps a leatherman.

No real story, I get harassed by the cops all the time, my cousin is in the department... So now he has his cop buddies randomly mess with me... I'm never in real trouble, now I think they ask if I have anything sharp just to see what I have lol...

You didn't sink straight to the bottom with all that steel?:D

I forgot about a doctors appointment I had recently. The doctor asked me to get on the scale to get my weight, so wanting to be as accurate as possible I started emptying my pockets. A ZT0350, Leatherman Wave, a random swiss army knife, and a Ka-Bar TDI ended up filling my hat along with my Redline flashlight, cellphone, lighter, chapstick, change and various other little items and the doctor just stood there staring at me for a minute in shock. Finally he asked what all that was for and if I felt like I was in danger. I said, "Nope. I just carry that stuff when I go out most places.". Like others have said, each of those has a purpose and I can carry them comfortably, so I do. It's not like I'm walking around with this thing(pic below, top knife) on my hip looking like Crocodile Dundee or anything, but thats sort of the reaction I get when people realize whats in my pockets.

This is absolutely the worst thing you could say to a police officer, at least in Canada!!!

A knife is just a tool, until you decide to use it as a weapon. The second you admit to using, or planning on using any tool as a weapon, even only for self defence that knife became a weapon, and you are now breaking the law!

In Canada as soon as that tool is admitted to be a weapon you open up a world of charges, that the wrong PO can lay.

88. (1) Every person commits an offence who carries or possesses a weapon, an imitation of a weapon, a prohibited device or any ammunition or prohibited ammunition for a purpose dangerous to the public peace or for the purpose of committing an offence.

89. (1) Every person commits an offence who, without lawful excuse, carries a weapon, a prohibited device or any ammunition or prohibited ammunition while the person is attending or is on the way to attend a public meeting.

90. (1) Every person commits an offence who carries a weapon, a prohibited device or any prohibited ammunition concealed, unless the person is authorized under the Firearms Act to carry it concealed.

I realize things are different in the US in some states, but in Canada the only legal way for carrying knives, is that they are tools for everyday use, that in a pinch could be used in self defence, but that is never their intended purpose, and admitting to a cop they are is asking for trouble.

It's always the same people every day that make fun of me for having 2 folder, 2 leathermans, 2 sak's, and 2 flashlights that always seem to need to borrow one. And that's why I carry 2 lol

What Sez... said, every time someone says "Why are you carrying all that" they find many uses for them........ ;)

That's exactly what I was going to say.
Knife carry is almost completely motive-based. In provinces in canada there are very few blade length laws or blade-style laws. Its basically just no gravity knives, no automatics and don't say you're using it as a weapon.

That was just the knives lol, I had flashlights and other gear in my pants, but I'm a decent swimmer as long as I get my boots off first. haha

Now I get it...a quick car indeed! Marvelous cars those Porsche's. If I were to own another it would be a 1972/73 model.

I hiked the Mt. Gardner trail on Bowen island yesterday with my friend's family. None of them packed a knife so I felt compelled to compensate for that. I had a Ratmandu teklocked to my right side, a Benchmade Adamas folder clipped to my my right pocket, spyderco Dragonfly ZDP-189 in my coin pocket, Benchmade Adamas fixed blade in my other pocket, ZT 0560 in my jacket pocket and I handed my buddy my Esee 4. My Busse TGLB stayed in the car unfortunately. My friends parents laughed when it was lunchtime and he asked for a knife to cut the bread, salami and cheese. He chose the Adamas fixed blade. For a good hour of the hike me and my friend were carving sticks with our knives, youno the usual thing two fifteen year olds do with knives. Most people jogging and walking their dogs by us looked at our knives but were reassured when we greeted them with "good morning". I never had to explain why I carried so many knives because nobody asked. :)

My bad,I should've specified,I was referring to the single knuckle duster,he didnt mind the SAK at all it was returned to me at the end of the ordeal, the knuckle duster was not,I was let off with a warning and kind Canadian have a nice day.
The guy asked for honesty,he got just that, then asked me why I would have it and I made sure to outline that Im well capable with my own 2 hands and its there just in case of an emergency (5 to 1 kind of fight),which is true.

Cops dont get guns to protect citizens, they're there to protect the cop, most cops want honesty and will get really butt-hurt when you lie to them,so me saying I have something for self defense doesnt make it or break it,Im very convincing and can explain myself very well, when I got searched I also had paracord, duct tape and a flashlight,so being prepared was an easy thing to explain.
