Trying to design/build one for use with my tractor's PTO, but I just can't wrap my mind around a couple parts. I really need to see one in person so I can figure this out.

Any help is appreciated.

If you don't mind, why are you wanting to use the tractor as a power sorce? From my past research it seams like most hammers run off an electric motor that is less then 1hp. I think I read about a guy that uses a 1/4hp motor.

I would agree. A 25-50 lb hammer shouldn't require more than a 1hp electric motor. And you'd likely want to speed up your 540 RPM to get the cyclic rate you want out of a hammer. Might be less expensive to just use an electric motor than a gearbox or belts and pulleys.

1. I'm a glutton for punishment
2. I already plan to use the hydraulics from the tractor for my press
3. Easy to hook up to the PTO and 3PT and move out of storage to where I want to use it
4. Easy to move back into storage when I'm done
5. It's got plenty of power, so why not use it

A tire hammer needs to be a permanently placed object. The motor is not a large one, and is best built into the system.

The hydraulics on a tractor are the wrong type for a press. It will work too slow. You need 16GPM at 2500PSI .

For what it's worth, the 25# Little giant at the museum I worked at had a 3/4hp electric motor, and never seemed to be lacking power.

Good to know, thanks, Stacy. Hadn't thought of permanently placing the hammer.
