i have been looking for an anvil and am having no luck. i found a new cast steel one for $375 shipped for a 110lb supposedly from europe somewhere. i think i would prefer a little heavier one. dont know if i should jump on that one, or wait and keep looking locally...any ideas? if anybody has one you can email me at oldolds442@yahoo.com
thanks

i am in macon, about 90 miles SE of atlanta. dont mind traveling a little to find a nice on, though.

Duh, guess I should read the title a little closer. Know exactly where it is as I was stationed at Warner Robins for a year. Anyhow, I would go with a cast anvil unless you are general hobbyist. You can look on ebay under the user "matchless antiques" and find some pretty nice older ones and the shipping isn't too bad. However, they're a lot pricier than the cast. I picked up my 120lb for about $250 off of the forums here and it's good enough for me. I'm more of a stock removal type, I just like banging hot metal sometimes. I'd keep an eye on Craig's list for the Atlanta area too...you can find some farrier estates and such...just search on anvil or blacksmith.

Put the word out to your local farriers and blacksmiths that you are looking, these guys always seem to have a leed on anvils.

Check with the guys in the Georgia Knifemaker's Guild or come to Batson's Hammer In during the first weekend in April over near Birmingham, Alabama.

Good luck to you. Hit the phones and call up any metal shops, machine shops, and blacksmiths in the area and politely ask in they have an unused or old anvil they would be willing to sell or know of anyone who does. Sometimes, they'll have early equipment that they've upgraded and may be willing to sell. I know a guy who owns a machine shop and has three anvils, but they're all in use, and he's not willing to part with one. :(

Hope the search goes well. Try finding one out here in West Texas. Only thing I've seen/found are smaller farrier anvils.
