hey guys. i moved to austin, texas about 8 months ago from the washington d.c. area. i grew up in the shenandoah valley, in the heart of the blue ridge mountains. i went to college, did the whole party thing, but now i am amped to get back into the lifestyle that i led growing up. is there anyone on here in the austin area? i would love some help on where to go or even to just be in contact with others in the area. i've done enchanted rock but outside of the it's just really been Pace Bend Park, which seems to be very crowded most of the time. anything would help. thanks.

Welcome aboard murderedsongbird, I'm a little north of you, up in Killeen. My wife loves Enchanted Rock for day hikes and bouldering. There are some good places in/around Austin that some other members here have more experience with. For us, we like Colorado Bend State Park, out near Lampassas. Somebody brought up more remote areas in the Hill Country, where they are less populated...hopefully somebody with dredge those back up if you can't find them.

Welcome to Texas!

I'm in Houston. There are a few parks in your area but nothing spectacular. Off the top of my head there are Bastrop SP and Big Thicket SP. You can search for parks on the state parks website by city's that they are near.

In Georgetown, 20 minutes north. Try Pedernales Falls state park, Lost pines, Bastrop state park, 16 mile Goodwater trail in Georgetown. Welcome to Texas. Those are the closet to us. Try txhiking.com. Oh and there is McKinney roughs state park. Hope that helps.

I am in Houston as well. I did Pedernalas this weekend - you can get some hiking in and the primitive area was DEAD last weekend - and 60+ degrees.

Im in Austin proper, my favorite is always Colorado Bend SP. Even the Barton Creek Green belt in the middle to town is an amazing amenity.

Talfuchre, thanks for fixing that for me. I posted from my cell phone and couldn't look it up.

Welcome to Texas!
I also recommend Bastrop and Pedernales parks. They are fantastic for hiking and camping. Bastrop has beautiful old cabins that can be rented as well.

I actually lived in the DC area for 4 years, but TX is home.
