I definitely plan on buying a modified D2 Sifu, then perhaps I will retire #59. I had to do a small amount of sanding to knock off points left on the First Edition model finger grooves. I assume this has been taken care of in the production model, or if not I can do it again. I also like my green G-10 handle. [I'll have to go hold up my Blue G-10 Bladeforum Native & see what my imagination thinks of that color in a bigger handle, not that anyone has mention color as an option. I have not seen the red ones.]
Thus, the question becomes would I buy one without finger grooves (ignoring the issue of color for now). It might be comfortable, but I believe I would want finger grooves.
The finger grooves add functionality. This is a large knife with a handle that basically gets smaller towards the back. The grooves allow one to hold just the rear half or so of the knife without fear of loosing it. I like to be able to hold this way for some modest chopping, e.g. cleaning the branches off a sapling for a hiking stick, etc., or chopping vegatation.
Although I do not plan on using this knife for defensive purposes (my lawyer made me say that!) I believe they probably add to that function, e.g. thinking of the story of the taxi driver rescuing a youth from a pit bull with only a small SAK (Swiss Army knife) that I recall reading about here on BladeForums (???). In any event they also usefully serve a more mundane purpose. I have often had a reason to stab a cardboard box, e.g., to cut out a handle. They may not be absolutely necessary for that purpose, but I believe they help.
Have I convinced anyone??
Has anyone actually done a substantial amount of chopping or some other hard chores with their Sifu? How did it hold up?
