Anyone Keep Their Sebenzas in a Safe?

For the price, I think I'd be tempted to keep mine solely in a safe and use it only sporadically. Or keep it for an heirloom. I know many people here use theirs and use them hard, but are there any out there who are more protective of their Sebbies? I imagine some would use them with no problem. Others might carry an additional knife or two and use theirs only for special chores. Still others might buy two or more Sebbies and sock all but one in their safes and use that one.

I ask this because in the gun world, I've seen the above happen with higher priced guns, mostly with revolvers like the Python and older Smiths. And what's true in the gun world often carries over into the knife world.

Anyway, I'm just curious.

If i were to spend that kind of money, you could bet that thing would go with me EVERYWHERE. I carry my Bradley Alias EDC, best folding/pocket knife i ever had.

Yeah i would not hesitate to use it for any regular knifely duties, opening boxes, skinning(if i hunted, i don't), whittling, and anything else a knife is expected to do. If i worked in a shipping factory, and had to open boxes all day you can bet it would be there.

If i could afford, i would keep one in the safe and use one, but likely the used oen would get passed down to my children, grandchildren, hopefully the one in the safe would help pay for they're college:D.

i use mine everyday, from opening mail and boxes,to chopping food and vegetables in the kitchen and cutting up my steak at my favorite steakhouse.
the finest large lockback i ever owned.

I use mine. Once I get mine sharpened up it will be my main EDC companion. I'm not too scared about scratches or signs of use but I'm not going to cut wire or something with it.

i have two sebbies. i typically edc one, and the other is in the safe with the rest of my higher end folders.

I have a Small Reg Sebe and 1st Production Run Alias I. I EDC them both. I love to have Top Shelf knives on me at my age (47). I also use my First Production Run Numbered BM 740 and the same for my Spyderco Hossom Forester (Great Chopper). I would lose my mind if all my knives were in safe. I can't seem to find enough reasons to use them now. I absolutly understand the folks who keep them put away and in no way think there is anything wrong with it. It's your stuff do as you wish and be HAPPY. Me, I'm happiest when I can have my favorite Stuff with me. Happy New Year!!! P.S My Son Returned home yesterday from 5 years in the ARMY and (2) 16 month tours of IRAQ. He has all 10 fingers and toes and is happy to be home. We are about to have our belated Christmas Breakfast and Gift passing. Say a prayer for the Tropic Lightning 235 guys still over there as well as ALL the rest of them!!!!! Be Safe All... ~baba~

I got a chance to meet a couple of fine young men and woman during a recent visit to the Dutchess County Fair in NY. They were army rangers working the recruiting table. Their enthusiasm and cheerfulness actually choked me up as I watched them talk to the kids asking questions. Thank your son for me....

Now as far as the knives go , I lock all my expensive knives in a safe when they're not being used, but I do agree with you, I hate doing it and wish I didn't have to.

I kept mine like as a Safe Queen, It was a beautiful woodie. It was more for admiring I guess. :) Then another "trophy" appeared, and I sold her. Maybe her new owner is putting her through her paces. It seems like the pretty ones never have to work real hard, but then they can get replaced. :)

If you're not using your Sebbie, I can understand (too some extent) that one could decide to put it in a display cabinet to admire it. But, why would you put it in a safe where you can't even see it? Perhaps for a really unique or rare model, but why for plain Sebbie that's available everywhere? Putting the money in a savings account does appreciate better then a plain Sebbie.

A large regular was $345 on 1/1/2001

A large regular is $385 on 1/1/2008

Let's say you bought that Sebbie on 1/1/2001 for $345. Since it's now 2nd hand, it's probably not worth more then $300 if it's in perfect condition (I do see some small scuffs however on your picture).

With 3% interest, that $345 spend in 2001 would be worth $424 now, thus, one could buy a Sebbie (NEW) and still have $40 left

With 4%, that would be $70

Moral of the story: regular Sebenza's are a BAD investment, so, in my humble opinion, the only purpose for them is to use them. ;)

Nice post. It makes perfect sense & I'm impressed.

I bought mine a few years ago. I think I paid right at 210.00 for it, right here on this forum. It is a small Sebenza with double thumbstuds. Got a heck of a deal and I have used the daylights out of it.

What's the point of having the extra quality built in if you're not going to use it?? You can't take it with you when you pass on---might as well use it now.

Let me clarify. I did not mean to imply that it was just "rat holed" away in the safe, never to be seen. Mine was looked at and operated daily, and admired for its incredible workmanship, ( it did open some mail! ) just not hard used. To me, that was it's real value. I actually sold it for a few $$ less than I paid, but it was still a value to me, as I got a lot of satisfaction during the time I had it. More of a comfort toy than a hard use knife. I have plenty of those, that I enjoy that way. Safe Queens do come out and play, not just stored and forgotten. If I had it where the kids could get it, they would be beating it like a rented mule, and forgetting where they last left it. :) :)

Sebenzas are in a bad place for my personal purchasing habits. Too expensive for a user (as in I haven't had knives at 1/5th the price ever fail on me) and not pricey/exclusive enough to buy one just to have one.

Unless it was a very specific sebbie (first one, first graphic, first woodie, etc.) I wouldn't bother putting it in storage.
