As the title says I am interested in making my own washers. I have some folders with some odd dia. pivots and would like to make some washers for them. Does anyone know of a tool like a punch and die set that wont nuke my wallet?

Have you considered a drill and a reamer to get the diameters you need?

I have tried using a drll press with just standard carbide coated dewalt bits and using oil to lubricate but what always ends up happening is the bit grabs the washer as it passes through and seriously deforms it. I have never used a reamer though. Would this work better on sheet metal?

Been lurking long enough, think it's time I start helping out where I can.

Found this clip yesterday from Sugarcreek Forge during his tutorial on making a folder he briefly explains how he made his own washers, starts at 2:46

Thanks everyone for the replies

Harbour freight sells a littel punch/die ste up that works great. It comes with an acrylic base with different size holes in it and a bunch of matched punches. I have used mine to make copper washers for friction folders http://www.harborfreight.com/9-piece-punch-and-die-set-95547.html

This appears to be the winner. I had a feeling id be making another harbor freight trip. I know they dont make the best stuff in the world but if your only going to use something once or twice i see no sense in going postal on my wallet.

Those punch and die sets work great. I used one when I was making my own washers. The one I used was from MSC (espensive) and you can also buy the teflon from MSC. The Harbor Freight one should work just fine and is a lot cheaper too.

Actually the harbor freight one I bought sucks. When using either thick or thin stock it doesnt punch clean and the punches are slightly smaller than the die so when you hit the thing it the matrial doesnt cut clean and kinda stretches is. Im gonna have to think of something else.
