The REI Flash 18 pack...only 10 oz. 18Liter capacity.

Its a cool lightweight bag....mesh straps..you can compress it really small when empty which is a key feature for me...i want to carry this in a bigger pack and use it for summit/day excursions. The only thing that i dislike is the drawstring top...have you seen anything similar w/ a zipper? (or a hood over the drawstring?)

Try Golight. They have some economical light packs. I have their ....crud I forgot the name.

You could try this one. It is the REI UL 30. The downside is that it is a little bigger and the frame has a plastic sheet for support(it can be slipped from its pocket easily).

Here you go:

Marmot Kompressor

This is the old Dana Design design that was pretty popular with backpackers. You can use it is a compression sack and then once you set up camp, you can use it as a day pack.

The Marmot Kompressor and GoLite Ion are best bets if you want something in comparable weight and size. If you want to go much bigger for a little more weight, Patagonia just introduced its lightweight travel duffel (14 oz, 36L! See it at patagonia.com). I haven't seen it in-person but their stuff is well-made if yuppy and a little pricey. My wife uses their Lightwire backpack for work.

I have the 1st gen. Flash, too, and have no problems with the top-loading. (But then my big pack is a Granite Gear Vapor Trail.) The Flash also has a sleeve for a water bladder.

Thanks for all the replies

Exploring some of your links I had just discovered the Marmot Compressor, Mountain Hardware Scrambler, and Mont-Bell Versalite 20 pack which i had not seen before. (and also a similar patagona bag now, the "lightweight travel bag")

As usual REI beats the rest of them in price.

I also have a first generation REI Flash and its a nice bag..just not exactly what i want.

The rest of them look pretty similar to each other..i might have to wait till I can see on in person somewhere. Thanks!
