Ok - lots to answer:
Those that have seen the elephant - well, I have seen it - but it is small and ugly...
Seriously: as said here - most knives are used in service for mendane duties. The average GI does not take out sentries with it. Special units that do have the occasional opportunity - use other and much more efficient methods. Sentry removal with a knife is today - for the most part - Hollywood stuff.
As for the AK-47 knife - mine was brilliant - and I didnt even had it for so long. Had an AK-47 as issue for a very short period. Great gun!
And maybe its just the years, nostalgia and my very limited understanding of knives at the time (even more so then today..)
Galil - almost no combat unit uses that anymore - we use AR-15 and 16. Only pencil pushers carry the Galil today...
I liked mine when it was still general issue - reliable as a horse - but not as accurate as an M16 and not as well built as an AK...kinda of in between...and the bottle opener was part of the bipod that was only issued at the very beginning...
Those who have served in combat - know that you sometimes dont have time to eat, sleep or even sit for days - and NO - we did not take care of our equipment during "wet" periods.
Back at base we did it - but for most of the time - both the weapons and the knives were rusty. The weapons got serious treatment - the knives never did. What can I say? We were young and stupid (and tired - very tired)
Fuller is right - IDF - like many other armies - is trying to get user-proof gear. That is not always possible and officials lack the understanding of what is good or useful knife for the GI in the field.
The soldiers wind up getting their own stuff or using the crap being issued and hating it.
The ka-bar is a fine knife and the nostalgia factor is working for it too but Id take a CS Recon Tanto or even SRK over it any day of the week (just to show that there are 40-50 $ options that are FAR better)
I have used the Recon Tanto on several occasions during my reserve duty - and it has served me very well.
