Anyone like Engraved or Embellished Bolsters?

Hi Peter,

Wow that is some workbench full of $$$$ gear! When you have time post some more of your work:thumbup:

Here is another custom 112, this one was on an auction site for over a year before pulled the trigger as a gift for my son.

You are right about a lot of $$$$ on the bench JB. The tools are NOT inexpensive.

This is a 112 from a few years ago.

Hi Peter,

Not fond of the odd white diamond inlay However, your engraving is pure eye candy!

That is ivory JB. It is a used knife and there was a little ding in the scale, so I figured to hide it under the inlay. What I didn't expect was that the laminated wood scale would chip rather than cut smoothly. It is my knife and it looks better holding it. The picture DOES make it look a bit crude.

Here is a Ron Smith (aka "The Master") design which was part of a scroll kit he put together for GRS. The 525 is a SMALL knife and cutting the tight curves was a challenge!

I'll add a few to the thread now that I'm home and don't have to try to do things with my new smart phone. That would have taken forever for me.

Here's a commercial job, White Tail Hunter 110. I like it, not bad looking for what it is:

Here's another one, the John Wayne, Hamilton Mint 110. It looks pretty good also for one mass produced:

Another mass produced with nice "engraving":

I'm still out backpacking in NC, so I can't post any pictures. Not sure that I have many engraved bolster Bucks anyway.

One that I like more than most I've seen was the Duke posted by Plumberdv on the last SPS post #5. Very nice work on that one!! Maybe this will motivate him to re-post that picture over here on this thread. :)

Here it is again at Stump's request, the George Sherwood engraved 500:

Another one done by a real engraver. I bought the knife from Bruce Dollinger who said he had the ivory scales installed and the bolsters engraved by Jim Whitehead, master jeweler and engraver. The scrimshaw work was done for me by Leesa Martin.

Before the scrimshaw:

What a great thread. Thanks for posting such wonderful shots!

Yum.

I really need to keep my eyes open for other 500s. There was a significant variance in blade shapes among the 500s, yes? This 1 dotter has a lot more belly to it that mine does. Funny how a little change can make such a huge difference in the appeal of a blade. I like the shape of that 1 dot blade much, much more.

Thanks for posting it.

Nice one's there pd.
I really like those last two, are they 521's?

Thanks. I believe that they are 521's. They're both from 2002 so they only have the anvil stamp and no model number but they're the same size and shape as the other 521's I have.

Here's a couple more examples of "embellished" bolsters by J. Kidd. I wouldn't call them engraved by any stretch of the imagination, more like the work was done using a dremal tool rather than an engraving tool. Not to my taste at all, but I bought them way back before I was as discriminating as I am now.

Not crazy about the engraving on the 501 either but I sure like the scales on it.

Hi Dave,

Good to have you back! I was hoping you would post some knives for our enjoyment.
I love these two

I wondered if anyone would post some of the embellished bolsters like this.

Hi All,

Some very nice knives have been posted so far in this thread. I was hoping we would get more folks to interact and share their thoughts and or some photo's. However, it is what it is;). If you have an embellished bolster on your Buck knife post it. As you can see it could be a show knife like Peter makes or a child like embellishment like in the OP.

Now Dave posted some 521/501's that have a blue stainless finish. Here is one of them from my pile, can anyone tell what the logo on this one is? I also have one with a Pheasant and a photo of one with a Duck.

Dave also posted a photo of the John Wayne, the Duke 110. Make note that this was made by Buck as a SO for FM and sold by the Franklin Mint.

I love that etch on your CHP 110 Armand. Some of those were etched on the bolster like Armand's some had no bolster etch at all and if you were an officer you could have your badge number added.

Here is another lawdog 110 with bolster etching.
