Anyone making any good jacks anymore?

I love the jack pattern, I would say it is my favorite but you know how that goes:). Question, does anyone currently make a good carbon steel two bladed jack besides the Case Small Texas Jack or Sway Back Jack? I have a couple of the Texas and Small Texas Jacks, but looking for something different. I also really like my Boker Barlow which is jack like, but it seems they are only making it in canyon river bone. IMHO, sawcut brown or green bone is the only way to go on a Barlow.

Maybe GEC?
Thanks for the suggestion, but I don't care much their styling or size options. I really should have seen that one coming and included it in my original post to read "except sway back jack, small texas jack, or GEC".

I have been looking at the Queen line, but that is not the carbon steel you are looking for. Very nice patterns though. I have the Case/Bose Swayback Jack in green bone because it was the only bare end/single bolster option at the time. Love it, very good knife. The chestnut bone and CV blade option makes me want to order another.

As for you quest, maybe put some time into eBay and find an older knife in the pattern you want, the right blade steel and handle material. I have seen members post some very nice eBay finds here. The hunt may be half the fun. Good luck.

I have sworn off buying another Queen for a while until they fix their thick edges. I have bought several over the years and either sold or traded them off because I could stand the grind. I only kept two, one is a copperhead(great knife but had to do alot of edge work myself and now the bevel on one side is so uneven and wide that it is to ugly to carry), and their ther is a sodbuster than someone did all the rough work on.

I may pick up a Sway Back Jack some day, but the design doesn't appeal to me, I don't like the handle or the wharncliffe blade and it is just a litttle too short. Is it comfortable to hold and use?

E-bay is a little frustrating for me, if you search jack knife, you get everything that resembles a knife, so you almost have to search by maker. After you do find a knife you shouldn't have to live without, the price is too high or you get outbid at the last moment. They have alot of good deals, but they are hard to find and even harder to win.

Keep the suggestions rolling, even if it no longer in production just as long as it won't be too hard to find.

What size are you looking at? Queen has a line called the Queen City Cutlery Classics which is made with 1095 blades. There's a knife called the English Jack that is a beauty and available in stag, ebony, green bone, and one other handle material. It's a big one though at over 4" closed.

I thought that technically all pocketknives were "jacks"

If you don't like queen or the secondary market, either try Canal Street or look over seas.

I like MIke Alsdorf's Interframe Jacks.

How about a Schatt&Morgan carbon Harness Jack? It's true it has a punch as secondary blade but....

How about going to an older Case like one of these. #62087. One's from the 50's and one's from the 70. They have great carbon blades!

And were would you get one of these?! They are beautiful!

I also LOVE jacks, and carbon steel, but have not been able to find anything other than the Case texas jack. So that is the only slippie I currently own.

I would love to find a carbon jack with nice round bolsters like those.

I found both of these knives at area antique stores. I'm sure I paid to much but I like them and may not have ever had the oppertunity to own one other wise. I think I paid $80 for the older one and $55 for the newer one.

It's my understanding that a "jack" is a two bladed folder with both blades pivoting on the same end.

This is what I thought also.

I've been monitoring jacks on the bay for several weeks now, specifically 52087. These stainless stags usually run close to 80; bone well under that.

knowtracks, Technically you are correct. The spring back knife was invented by a French knife maker named Jacque de Liege. At one time all spring back knives were Jacques(French) Jack(English). A little more information HERE...

Thanks for the link D.P. I was told that the name (jack) came from the inventor and I also thought I remembered French, but I wasn't sure of the year or the inventors last name.

I learned something there. Thanks:thumbup::cool:

I can't imagine being without my tear drop easy plucker jack. Thats why I commissioned Ken Coats to make me one special order just to my liking but for productions try the Marbles 2001 series still sold at just a few places but only while they last. These were all 1095 blade steel and done for them by Queen which means it is a good one. I have four of them. Love the things, especially the ones with the buffalo horn handles but the bone is nice also. Last time I checked these guys still had a few of both left. Its where I got mine.
