Last week I happened upon someone who was interested in flint and glass blades and who had made quite a few. He also had traditional stone axes , arrows and the like. However he stressed they were not functional and were "art" pieces only. Anyway it did get me interested, and I was wondering if there was anyone actually making functional blades out of flint and glass.

I know of one person making them, but I forgot his name. He was at the Custom Knife show in North Carolina last year, and the year before.(I didn't make it this year) Maybe one of the other North Carolina forum members who went to the show this year knows who I am talking about. I have his business card some where. He was selling a few flint blades. One I was looking at was called a "Hunters Scapel". Just a little blade, but scary sharp. I look for his info.

Blades,
The man's name is Errett Callahan. He live in Lynchburg, Virginia. He specializes in flintnapping. Quite a few of his pieces are for display only. He does make arrowheads and small knives that are very functional.

You can get contact info in one of the knife annuals like "KNIVES 2000".

Cliff,
Another option in NC would be

Run a web search for "knapping" and you'll turn up people selling stone knives, comprehensive directions for doing it yourself, and some info from people who use stone knives and arrowheads.

I ran into a knapper at a gun show who was selling flint knives he'd made, mostly in the $40-$80 range (US money). He showed me one he'd dressed and skinned seven deer with ... he said it wasn't quite as sharp as new, but I couldn't see or feel any difference.

Pow-wows often have knappers and sometimes classes. Any pow-wow should at least have a few flint knives for sale.

Here's a website to get you started: http://www.ucs.mun.ca/~t64tr/knap.html

Cliff try www.Stickbow.com. Best traditional archery site on the net. Ask around and you will be put in touch with any number of knappers etc. Even Erret Callahan. He is the "godfather" of all primitive traditionalists as Bill Moran is the "godfather" of all modern blade forgers. Keep'em sharp
