Anyone managed to rust S35VN?

I got some very small spots of rust on an S35vn ESEE 3 when I took it to the coast and I assume that was entirely due to the salt water in the air and summer humidity. Nothing some oil and light scrubbing couldn't get rid of its pretty darn resistant to rust in my experience.

Yeah same here,I get little pepper spots on all my S35vn. Doesn't happen to me with s30v. Considering edge retention is worse as well, it's a big step down for me in a folder.

So you're saying that you prefer S30V?

The forum's own Larrin Thomas did edge retention testing on a whole slew of steels that you can find here and one of the things that came out of it was that S30V does actually hold an edge longer than S35VN in his controlled cut tests. That being said, there are a whole lot of folks on here (like myself) that still prefer S35VN because it is easier to sharpen than S30V, is tougher and thus less chippy, and is by the same nature tougher and can be used more readily in hard use or fixed blade knives. I tend to find the difference in real world cutting ability to be negligible between the two.

I’ve had S35VN knives since the steel was introduced & I live on a river. Never had a spec of rust on the several I own but the blades are religiously cleaned & oiled at the end of the day.

How about S45vn?
I'm seeing it described as "stainless".
true, or false?

I have a bait knife with removable scales and I get some rust spots under the scales that I have to buff out occasionally.

Stainless is just a technical term for having above a certain amount of chromium. It doesn't mean rustproof. Every steel mentioned here is stainless steel.
Yeah nominally most people place the cutoff around 11-12% chromium as the cutoff for what denotes "stainless" or not. This is why D2 can be so finicky; it tends to sit right at 11-12% chromium so depending on where you got your D2 from, some might stain or rust easier than others. It is probably more accurate to call it 'semi stainless' and as you said, just because something has more than 12% chromium content does not necessarily mean that it wont rust at all.

Thanks for the metallurgy lesson today: I leave a much wiser man... 👍
And I ain't kidding: I learn new stuff in here every day!

I use a Chris Reeve Sikayo for my cooking duty in the kitchen and currently have rust spots on the pommel.
