He was cutting a box with it and I was surprised that he had a Cold Steel knife, so I said, “Is that a Cold Steel ?”...He didn’t even know what a Cold Steel was and the blade had rust on it. So I checked it out and it had no blade play what so ever, so I asked him how much would he sell it for and he charged 10 dollars. I knocked all the rust off the blade with Liquid Wrench spray but haven’t sharpened it yet.
I think Lyn Thompson has Tri-Ad on the brain. True, it's a fantastic locking system, but no one was complaining about the old knives!
Don't get me wrong. I absolutely am a fan of the Tri-Ad lock, but if I had a choice between a Tri-Ad lock or a mirror polish on my blade instead of a cheap satin finish or a stone washed finish, I'd take the mirror polish any day! In all the time I've ever owned a Cold Steel Voyager, I've never yet had to pound it in to a piece of wood and have Andrew Demko stand on it! I've taken out some of my old Voyagers and now have right here an old 5-inch Voyager, polished blade, sleek with VG-1 steel and like new clip! And over there is another Voyager 5-inch with the clip molded into the frame! AUS8A blade, and beautifully polished. After holding a modern Voyager, holding the old ones are so much nicer. Oh, and here I've got a 6-inch polished blade that looks sleek and deadly! Yeah, it's only a half-inch longer blade, but I can hold it here in the back and look, ma! More reach! Plus the looks are incredible! Thompson only put out the 5.5-inch XL blade because Texas limits its blades to that. The 6-inchers were definitely cooler and sleeker...plus they were strong.
Like I said, I'm glad I have the older ones. And they're viciously sharp. My new Frenzy was okay sharp, but far from the sharp I was used to. Look, I can even rub my thumb down the sharpened edge of the Frenzy. I would never do that with my old Voyager. I'd most likely slice my finger or thumb open!
If one is using a large knife for self defense, sharpness can mean everything. It's okay if I have AUS8A or VG-1 because they can be bleedin' sharp. And if I use the knives, I can make them hair poppin' sharp again with just a few strokes on a $15-$20 sharpener!
