Saw one of Bill's knives pop up on eBay under suspicious circumstances.

No sheath, beat to hell, cracked handle, blade was scuffed and scratched, dull, with rust spots on it... but surprisingly saw no chips out of the edge and the tip appeared intact.

New seller, no feedback, when queried said "My uncle found it somewhere."

Bill did not make many of these, and they are ALL in private collections... except this one, which apparently was stolen from a collector's home in a burglary.

The question is, whose Bagwell was this? Dogbone handle, 8" blade.

STOLEN BAGWELL?

If you dont have proof it was stolen you really need to STFU. Seriously.

You should not be surprised that the blade is beat up but there are no chips and the tip is intact……. Billy knew how to heat treat a blade

Where are you getting this information from?

This is a highly collectable and very expensive knife made to a customer's specifications... Bill wanted to know your physical measurements before he'd make you a Bowie. He also made very few Bowies with the dogbone handle.

Seller was very evasive when questioned. I initially assumed he'd inherited it from a family member. He told me, "My uncle found it somewhere, I dunno where he found it."

That is shady AF... and stolen items show up on eBay all the time. Maybe it's not stolen, maybe it appeared to his uncle like Excalibur sticking out of a tree trunk in the woods, maybe his uncle woke up in ER to be told someone stuck it in his scapula, maybe he even won it fair and square in a poker game after betting his fake Rolex and last book of food stamps... but it was not acquired via the normal channels. 90% chance someone is missing this Bowie.

Good information. At least now, by the size of the Bowie,
we can fairly guess the hight and weight of the owner that lost it :thumbsup:
LOL.

But yeah, Bill wanted your height as well as the length of your forearm to determine the length of the blade he felt would be right for you. An 8" blade would be for someone under 5'10".

So you assume someone on the internet who may or may not be especially knowledgeable on blades stole something, based on the condition of the blade and the fact that said stranger in the internet didn’t answer another stranger’s prying questions? That’s a far reach, I’ve had hundreds of things given to me by uncles, grandparents, etc. and have had no idea how they came into possession. A guy I used to work with pulled out a custom built Randall that he used as a kitchen knife. Had no idea what it was, couldn’t remember where he had gotten it.

Maybe it is stolen, but without proof you are just kind of throwing accusations around.

Frankly, this seems like a lot of nonsense speculation. Let me guess, you were outbid?

Publicly accusing them of theft becuase they haven’t proven where something came from is pretty shady too

I never accused the seller of theft.

I said this is most likely stolen. Bit of a difference.

Your language suggests that you believe the knife to be stolen (with no proof), the seller is the thief (with no proof), or who is in collusion with the thief at the very least (with no proof). Your projection of doubt on the seller's story kinda makes it plain, man. Again, you don't have any understanding or knowledge of the provenance of this knife. The buyer's uncle could have been one of the folks you speak of who had this very expensive, very collectible knife made, and when he died, maybe his collection passed to the seller who might not be a knife person. I've given high end knives to family members who aren't "knife people" before, and the next time I visited, I saw that they'd been used, or even abused. This is common, so I don't know why you insist that there must be foul play involved.
