Hey fellers, I'm a chronic forum lurker; I don't post much but read everything and am learning a ton! I'm sorta new at this knifemaking thing and was wondering if there were any experienced bladesmiths/knifemakers near Austin (I live in Cedar Park) who might be able to spare some time/energy to help a new guy along in person.

Do I know you?

I'm sure there are some folks willing to let you hang out in the shop a while.
Welcome to the forum.

Yeh there are several in the austin- san antonio area. check out
www.tkca.org and see where a bunch of them are and contact info.

Johnny Stout is an excellent maker out in New Braunfels, not too far from Austin. There are surely others out there. I'm a hobby maker, and I'm only about 7 hours north of you ;).

Thanks, folks, for your feedback. I found a few on the Texas Knifemakers and Collectors Association website, and even got in touch with one. Super nice guy, and only lives 3 miles away! He's in about the same situation as me, though: just starting out and getting set up, but we may get together later to swap stories and learning.

And J, I reckon you know me better than most but not as well as some! Remember, we're headed your way next weekend, and I may bring a project or 2 with me.

Johnny Stout has a pretty good hammer-in about twice a year. Contact him and get on his mailing list. He brings in a bunch of great knifemakers to teach everyone. You can contact him through TKCA or the knifenetwork. Good luck.
