Hey William, let me know what you find out in your area. I'm heading to Afghanistan for a few months, but when I get back it looks like we'll be moving back to Augusta, GA.

I hope everything works out and you find some good hiking/camping areas!

How did the move go? I have not talked to you in a while, I hope eveything is good.

There isn't much public land in Texas. But if you drive west and cross the border into New Mexico, much of SE New Mexico is BLM land that is open to fishing and hunting, backpacking, camping, hiking, etc.

A bit farther west, around Carlsbad, is a large are of Lincoln National Forest, the Carlsbad Caverns National Park, and the Guadalupe Mountains National Park (highest point in Texas). Lots of great hiking in all of these areas.

Head north to the junction of New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas, and Colorado. There you'll hit the Kiowa National Grasslands, Comanche National Grasslands, and Rita Blanca National Grasslands. These are managed by the National Forest Service, and have open public access.

Keep in mind that some areas are a checkerboard of public and private property. You'll want to pick up some detailed land maps to avoid any 'unfriendly' encounters with land owners. ;) The BLM has a series of 1:100,000 maps called "Surface Management Status" maps that work very well.

Hope you find some similar opportunities closer to your town...

Dr, Bill,
I live in Lubbock and we usually go to Canyon (south of Amarillo) to Palo Duro to hike. Hope this helps. Texas has very little challenging places around here that is not privately owned. You might find a good place and ask for the land owner for permission to hike. That is how I got alot of hunting places for coyotes.
