Anyone on the fence regarding the GSO 8 vs 10?

I did a fair amount of research and testing to find an answer for myself about whether I prefer using an ax or a large knife for wood processing.
What I found is that for in the yard doing bulk wood splitting you really cannot beat an axe or a maul.
However for hiking or general camping (although not impossible), finding a perfectly flat surface to split logs on can be tricky . Also splitting wood on soft ground is much less effective than having a splitting log like most do in your yard .
I found after a long hike or on a slight incline using a larger knife to split and process wood was much easier and much faster and much less risk of hurting myself .
I love my axes but think everyone should give a big chopper a try, and I think the light saber that is the GSO 10 would be a great start

Great post my friend.

I feel I always get more from this forum than I can contribute, so wisdom from real experience is always great to see. I'm looking forward to the day a GSO 10 replaces my Fiskars hatchet.

I had a GSO 10
Not a bad chopper but nothing compared to my FFBM
Survive has the edge in small and medium blades but for choppers I would still go with busse

GideonsTactical's review on YouTube was not exactly a resounding endorsement of GSO 10's prowess as a chopper, but in all fairness let's also bear in mind that Guy had not designed the GSO 10 as a pure chopper!

I'm fine with this, I have a Becker bundok BK20 that I would be switching out with, which is not a pure chopper. I'd say the FBM is more of a pure chopper and would be awesome to have one, they are badass but for now I'm content with my BK21 kukri for a chopper.

Man, thank you all for such great replies. Really didn't think I would get this many so soon. Thank you for yours in particular RCB. The flat surface thing is something I don't think about much, but we normally do fairly well traveled campgrounds where I have not run into that issue yet, but can see how it would be an issue. We are looking at renting an RV next time, so that will change things too, if we start to go trailering instead. Camping is too much for us right now with a toddler.

Part of why it's so hard is I can't have many in hand, as they don't ship before the next model starts production, so it's hard to try one, and say, OK if XX was different I would like to more, so I will try YYY model instead. You have to basically have a bunch on order I guess. First world problems I tell ya.

Lots of good info in here. I really have tons to think about.

Justin, you might also want to consider how you will be using it too. If you plan to hike miles with it on your belt, the 8 might be a better option. Based on my experience, anything longer than that is going to be more challenging to draw from the belt and they are heavier on the belt. They are more suitable for pack mount.

I will go for the 10 or even 12 [emoji16] if it a drive-camp knife. The bigger the better in this case [emoji6]

Thanks Don,

At this stage in my life, toddler, baby etc, it's all car camping.

I was reading back through this and it kinda looked like I was taking a shot at your FFBM. I was NOT doing that. I just knew you'd been pushing hard for the 8 and I was making a recommendation for the 10 (thus the 'sorry RR'). I went back and edited that out so as to be more clear.

I can't make any comparisons against the FBM, I don't own one and have never been fortunate enough to use one in the woods. But if it hits significantly harder than the current GSO 10 that is impressive.

Congrats. Same here. My daughter is 3 months old now. Have not been doing any hike since her arrival. My brand new 5.1 is still sitting in my drawer [emoji28]

Congrats to you as well! I hope you have a yard to play in. I have about 2000lbs of green waste processed in the past few weeks, better than the drawer!
