Anyone own a Cold Steel AK47???

I have one. It is bulky and overly long for the blade which appears stubby and too short and too thick for the knife itself. It does not have a good feel or ergonomics to it. It appears strong, lock included. It will wave open. I think cold steel is a wonderful company and they have better products than this one, keep looking is my two cents.

Systemadude, when you get your Recon 1, please let us know how you like it...also, which blade configuration you chose. I got the tanto plain edge and the clip point plain edge, and I'm happy with both knives. I also have the older half-serrated clip point with 440A stainless and a FRN steel-reinforced handle model. Oddly, I like the hanle material on the older model better than the G10 on the newer, but it's only fair to tell you that I'm in the minority.

If you're still looking for information on knife steel, look at Joe Talmadge's FAQ on knife steel as well as his sharpening FAQ. Keep in mind that most steels, if properly heat treated, are significantly better than you think they are after reading about them. (If I had read about 440A before buying knives with blades made from 440A, I probably wouldn't have bought them, and it would have been my loss.)

Anyway, do check back in and let us know how you like the Recon 1. I think you made a good decision.

I had one & sold it immediately.Just too big, bulky & just plain ugly for my taste.

Confederate... About that Recon1 lol, right before I finished putting in my credit card number to purchase the knife I thought I'd have one more look around.
That's when the Sog Flash II caught my eye.
I've held and used a Recon1 before and it seems about the same size as the AK47. So since most of the comments on the AK47 said that it's too bulky I thought that might be the case with the Recon as well.

But I did try out both the AK47 as well as the Recon1 and they both seem excellent (of course that's before I've owned them and found out the smaller details). They are both razor sharp and have no blade play. So the Recon1 will likely be my next knife.

As for blade type, (on my sog flash II) I figured that since this is my very first knife I'd keep it simple and get a strait edge drop point blade. For some reason I imagine that the serrations would be less handy than a plain blade (tell me if I'm wrong. When do the serrations come in handy?).

so when I get my sog I will certainly post and let you all know how I like it. And when I get my Reocn1 I will do the same.

Cheers.

if you want a decent waved folder that is comfortable to carry, i recommend the spycerco endura and delica wave.

Well, I haven't found that to be the case. The AK-47 is a turn-off to me, but the Recon 1 is sleek and, if anything, a bit too heavy. But one could just as easily say it was "overbuilt." Given the strength of the lock, the reinforced frame is appropriate for the knife.

I don't know much about SOG knives, but there are a lot of people who like them.

I just bought one at a pawn shop for $9.95! I actually stood by the counter
and tried to block the view of the knife till I could get some help. :D It was slightly used with some paint flaking on the clip. It is the grey aluminum handle with the satin finish blade. It waves real easily and the blade has a
great shape and the handle is very comfortable( a little big though) I like it so much I might spend the $60 for one of the g-10 versions, I doubt I will get it for $9.95!!!

I am actually looking to get a Recon 1. They look very durable. Never held one in my hand though.

I recently purchased the aluminum AK-47 and have been very happy with it as my EDC. I do not find it to be too bulky or heavy. It waves very easily from my pocket and the handle feels very comfortable in my hand. The 4mm thick blade looks and feels heavy duty. I have heard a lot of people complain about the grivory end piece; however, I find that it helps lock in my grip at the pinkie and will prevent the knife from being easily pulled out of my hand. My brother-in-law, who owns an older Japanese made Recon 1 spear point, wants to buy an AK-47 after trying out my knife. We did a quick-draw challenge and I beat him by a mile with the wave feature. Great knife for the money; however, the Recon 1 is a great knife as well.

cheaper than dirt has the one with the g-10 handle for 49.00 right now
i think thats a steal since msrp is over or about a hundred
infact i think i will order one right now haha i can always use another sharp blade

As others have said it does have a big handle but if your going to do some heavy cutting this is the knife for the job. Cold steel does a good job with the AUS8 its some tuff sh@# and it also has a hollow ground blade giving it better cutting performance.

The ak-47 is a wonderfull combat folder. A little beefy but really usefull. Quick and easy to open, absolutly secure grip, the blade is long enough for fighting especially in reverse grip. Choose the G-10, you won't be disapointed.:thumbup::thumbup:
