Anyone ran any tests on CPM154?

Hello all,

A customer wants me to make him a knife (pocket size knife - around 1/8 thick), but had bad - OK maybe very bad - experience with 154CM. Needless to say, when I offered him to make his knife out of a bar of CPM154 I happened to have in stock in that thickness, he was hesitant.

I didn't use any blade made out of this steel (yet); anyone have first hand info/experience/test results to share?

Well I have 4 slabs of cpm154 and just recieved 2 back from heat treat one i have finished and sharpened . I whittled a bit of wood to see what it was like after whittleing a small block of wood i sliced the news paper like a razor and shaved hair as well so it holds a good edge so far. the rc came out at 61 so its plants hard for edge retention i would think. I also have some 154 cm but i think the cpm 154 is better. ASK Rob Ridley he heat treats alot of it.
 
We use it on our "Pro Hunter Series" knives. There have been many good reports back on edge holding and absolutely no bad reports.
 
As long as the heat treat is good, the knives will be good. What kind of bad experience did he have? Maybe that can shed a little more light on what issues you can try to avoid.

I agree.
There are only a few things that REALLY matter in performance. Material, HT and geometry top the list.
Let's see ... 154 is good stuff with a very long history in cutlery.
With the limited info provided, I suspect HT as the most likely culprit. HT is easy to screw up and you (usually) can't tell by looking at it.
If a guy gets a soft blade, or a hard, chippy blade, he'll blame the steel almost every time.

Yes , 154CM is excellent and CPM154 is even better, one of the best. If you had a problem it would be poor HT.
 
As far as tests go, I have made several hundred knives from 154CM and CPM 154. Not one ever had a problem with the edge or breaking a blade.
