its a tiny pic but I found it for sale for $50, I just hope I hear back from the guy. its also got a sanding disk on the side. but what I'm wondering is if it has a contact wheel under the platen, or if I could add one (and be able to reach it) without much modification. I have no idea what brand/model this is but the price is pretty good.

Looks like a 1x30 but not sure of the make. Hard to tell from the pic but it doesn't look like it has a platen on it. If it does I don't believe the ones on a 1x30 are very sturdy.

I was gonna say it looks close to my little 1x30 HF. I know they make a similar one that includes a small disc on the side. With the disc, IIRC they are ~$60 new. W/O the disc they are $34.95. If it is the same one, there is (supposed to be) a detachable sheet metal platen.

really? I thought it looked bigger, guess its the angle. I already have a pos 30", I definitely don't need another one. thanks, I won't waste my time on this.

That pic looks identical to a 1x42 Craftsman that I have. Mine has plastic wheels, and are not really accessible as a "contact" wheel. No platen. It is good for shaping handles as is, and that's about it. On the bright side, you could potentially remove the motor as it sits, add a step pulley, and have poor-man's variable speed. I bought mine used for $20.

I thought it had to be over 30" but 42 still isn't worth it for me. any idea what the HP is on the motor? before I saw this I was just thinking of buying a large bench grinder and mounting some wheels on unistrut/welded angle iron etc. btw has anybody ever used skateboard trucks for the tracking wheel? thought it might be an easy way to make one.

Yeah its a 1x30, my friend has the same model sitting in his garage. 1/3 HP motor though so its a little underpowered.

Mine has a 1/3 hp motor, 1750 rpm.

You're basically looking at a home-shop sander for small woodworking projects. The disk is nice for flattening scales. You could probably do some slack belt grinding on small blades, but that's about it.

As for the skate wheels, if you find wheels with bearings, you might need to find an odd sized shaft to fit.

Have you looked at Sunray's selection?

meh, I have a little 1x30. it works but its slow and weak. if I'm going to put any money into it I want a 2x72.

not sure if I've checked out Sunray yet. I just googled it and didn't find anything.

Sunray, Inc., Polyurethane products. They make polyurethane covered wheels. You can specify wheel sizes, surface durometer, whether you want idlers with bearings, or keyed for drive shaft. An 8 inch contact wheel is under $80. A 4 inch drive wheel is around $30. You need to get quotes for anything under 4 inch diameter (i.e. 2 inch idler for a flat platen).

lol, I work in medical polyurethanes, I coat them on things for a living. though somehow I don't think our materials would be the most cost effective choice unless you planned on ending up with a chunk of it burred in your flesh :p. but I'll check them out before I start buying parts. what durometer would you recommend for a contact wheel? like a 55D or softer?

Grizzly and others sell that model. It is not a 1 X 30 but a 1 X 42 with an 8" disc. $50 is quite reasonable. I bought that same unit 4 years ago at a flea market and have used the hell out of it.

Depends. If it's going to be a contact wheel, then probably 70A. If a drive wheel, maybe something softer. Lots of guys have been ordering from Sunray. If you call them up and tell them what you plan to use it for, they'll probably tell you what people are using.

yup , looks just the 1 x 42 Grizzly I have in the shop , cept' mine is green.

Just noticed the new style 1 x42 Grizzly sells more resembles the DELTA 1 x 42.

The newer ones have a cast body , where the older style , like the one in your picture have a hollow top tube that supports the tracking wheel. It should have a small , and I mean SMALL platen that is nothing more than a piece of steel bent in an L and held on by one bolt.

The motor on mine runs at 1725 rpm.
