Anyone recommend a $4000.00 car?

Could somebody explain the whole VW reliability thing to me (I don't own one) but know lots of people that do and they seem to have no more or less car trouble than anyone else, just curious as to the bad rap, also hear that Volvo's are unreliable but have never seen any first hand proof of them being anything but good (but boring) cars.

$4,000 is a pretty low number to expect to find too perfect a car, but no matter what you get try to stick to motors that are PROVEN to last a long time from Good automakers, this will help you get the most out of your purchase. That means if you buy GM you want a 3.8 liter pushrod V-6 or a 5.3 or 5.7 liter pushrod V-8. Ford go with a 4.6 or 5.4 liter V-8, Chrysler 3.5 liter V-6, Nissan 3.5 liter V-6, Toyota 2.something liter 4 from camry and tacoma. This list is not all inclusive but these tend to be some of the best motors around. If I were you I'd be shopping for a used Tacoma 2wd standard cab 4 cylinder OR a Buick Lesabre with the 3.8 liter 6. Don't get a car just bc it is cheap get one that has a good chance of lasting a long time. Also before buying no matter what you get have a good mechanic that you trust put it on a rack and give it a good once over, that alone can help keep you from buying a lemon.

Ford go with a 4.6 or 5.4 liter V-8
That 4.6 is a great engine. I've had a Cougar and a Mark VIII with that engine, and it seems to last forever. The Cougar had 120,00 - 140,000 miles when I traded it in, and the Lincoln has 145,000 miles and still runs like new. Both vehicles needed some repairs at about 120k, but nothing with the engines. For older Fords the 5.0 liter 302 is another that goes and goes. My 1994 F150 has 165,000 and it's my daily work vehicle still.
