They came out with carbon fiber and rosewood scales.
I gotta say the rosewood looks nice.

A mix of two things I don't want, supporting a douche like Elliot Williamson and the opportunity to buy from that dumpster fire that is massdrop. Do not want.

That's news to me. What makes him a douche? Is there a thread I missed in GBU?

He big-timed a customer who asked about a massdrop knife's blade staining surprisingly easily. He told the customer that he just designs the knives it's not his problem if something is wrong and then as the discussion continued something like (paraphrasing) "not to be a jerk but I'm an expert and know everything and you don't". After it got around he was forced to make a super fake apology for PR damage control, but based on how he responded to criticism of the incident before the fake-sounding spin apology I've classified him as an epic tool bag.

It was on reddit, IIRC, I'm not finding it with a quick search but if you dig you can find the genesis of the thing if you want.

Edit: I found a screen cap of his totally super-believable apology (a 180 from his responses before it got spread around widely, as I recall). You can see it if you want here:

Also super cool that they were blocking people who asked about the incident on Instagram. Definitely someone whose business I want to support . . .

These have been out for a while. I think the CIVIVI Elementum with wood scales is a similar but slightly better knife.

Yea... The rosewood and carbon fiber Gents went up for order almost two years ago now (I ordered mine in June of 2018). I also have both a Civivi Elementum (ebony) and a Gent Select (carbon fiber) and I feel like it's a little bit of a stretch to call the Civivi a better knife. The Civivi uses D2 steel, the Gent S35VN. The Civivi has steel liner lock, while the Gent uses a thicker 6AL4V titanium frame lock. I do think the Civivi has a better pocket clip though. Other than that, I find them to be nearly the same knife as far as looks, quality, and action goes... The Gent just uses higher quality materials.

O. News to me. But I don't own a FF knife and probably never will. I bought one knife from drop. Meh. Thankfully, I only spent $50.

Why are so many knife makers quite so 'combative'? Are other small industries like this also or is there something about knives? The percentage of egos, nastiness and rip off artists seems particularly high from what I've seen over the years and of course, what we see on a daily basis on GB&U.

Thanks, that was the bit that kicked it off that I did a bad job searching for, apparently.

OK yep.

Total douche pickle.
Thanks for the insight evilgreg evilgreg & T The_Knife_Man

evilgreg evilgreg - Wow! Thanks for that. I have watched some of their YT videos and had some suspicions.

No problem, I figure in a big world full of makers there isn't any need to buy from d-bags. Of course what anyone else does with their money is their own business.

The start of the thing wasn't even what convinced me he was a tool, it was the complete 180 into that fake apology after the harsh responses (and blocks, lol) on socials to be called out in the first place. He went from "shut up you stupid peons" to "I am a sweet and contrite man" right about when he realized it might hurt his business.

I prefer the overall shape of the Elementum. However, I prefer the Gent's steel. While the Gent's pocket clip is a little unusual, I don't like how the Elementum uses black hardware. The Elementum's black clip and pivot create a strange contrast with the proud liners. I think it looks funny with scale colors other than black and it's kept me from buying the otherwise gorgeous rosewood version.

I'd love to see a stainless version of the Elementum, preferably without the black hardware.
