Anyone see these new gents at drop?

I’ve bought 4 or 5 collaborations from them and I have to say I had an issue with only one knife and their customer service turned out to be excellent! I’ve found that some of the knives they offer are excellent deals and some aren’t. You just need to wait for the one that strikes your fancy. I have to admit I never heard of the above mentioned convo with a customer. He came across very poorly!

Is FF the next Quartermaster?

No, Quartermaster's controversy (claiming their knives were made in the US and getting caught importing knives from China) is a lot different than just acting like a d-bag to a customer. The knife industry has no shortage of designers/manufacturers with reputations for being pretty terrible (Marfione and Mike Stewart come to mind immediately). Quartermaster's thing was a lot closer to Mickey Burger getting outed.

You don't hear much negative feedback on the quality of the collaborations put out by (Mass)Drop. From what I've seen, they work primarily with pretty high-end production companies (e.g. WE, Reate, ProTech) and usually aren't cagey about who makes their stuff. If you hear complaints, it's almost always about their business model or their branding (which has changed on later products). I've handled two of their FF knives (I got a Falcon for my dad two years ago, and own a Gent) and one of their other collaborations (Laconico Keen), and they've all been impressive quality, especially at the prices I paid (before they hiked everything by $20).

BTW, I've bought a bunch of stuff through Massdrop now. There have been some issues. For instance, I've gotten in on a drop only to be told a month later that they messed up and didn't have enough. I think I got my money back plus a $5 credit. I've also had things take forever and a day to ship. I think I got a $5 credit for my inconvenience when that happened with one of the CJRB knives. The main benefits from using drop have been occasionally great prices and a few exclusive products like the Gent.

He big-timed a customer who asked about a massdrop knife's blade staining surprisingly easily. He told the customer that he just designs the knives it's not his problem if something is wrong and then as the discussion continued something like (paraphrasing) "not to be a jerk but I'm an expert and know everything and you don't". After it got around he was forced to make a super fake apology for PR damage control, but based on how he responded to criticism of the incident before the fake-sounding spin apology I've classified him as an epic tool bag.

It was on reddit, IIRC, I'm not finding it with a quick search but if you dig you can find the genesis of the thing if you want.

Edit: I found a screen cap of his totally super-believable apology (a 180 from his responses before it got spread around widely, as I recall). You can see it if you want here:

Also super cool that they were blocking people who asked about the incident on Instagram. Definitely someone whose business I want to support . . .

Ha! Yeah. I’d forgotten about that.
At the time, I chocked it up Williamson being young and...well...stupid.
Remembering I was once young and stupid, I was able to let it slide.

Then I lost all interest in FFKW; changing tastes I guess.

I’m over Massdrop too (though I do like the belts they shill).

Is FF the next Quartermaster?

Ouch!

ETA: FWIW I still have a Massdrop/FFKW Crux. It stained way easier than pretty much any other stainless knife I own. I never recall a “good” explanation for that.

I really like my gent, it’s good quality and a great office carry. Couldn’t care less about if one of the designers wasn’t nice to someone on Reddit (which is basically troll central).

If I want to get upset with knife maker, I‘D take issue with companies that attack my constitutional rights and donate money to politicians who are trying to take away my right to bear arms.
