Anyone seen the new Scagel Dogwood folder?

Stumbled onto this one browsing around the other night. Didn't find any mention of it here yet so I thought I'd toss it out there.

The listed specs are 3 3/8" closed with 2 1/2" blade. Steel is ATS34, 1/8" stock. Final grind/sharpening done by Bark River same as the Fruitports. I don't know if they're made by GEC like the Fruitports were.

Looks like a pretty stout piece.

I doubt GEC mfg. They have no frame like it, have never used ATS-34, and the nail nick is cut out of position terribly (over onto the spine of the blade!).
I've never seen a GEC with a poor nail nick.

I usually love all Northwoods Scagel folders. I'm a little "meh" over this one...

Looks thick. Read somewhere that it was made by Queen and final grind done by BRKT. Not feeling it

I don't see much of Scagel's design influence in that knife. I kind of like parts of that design, but not branded as a Scagel. The swedge cutting into the nail nick is a definite turn off.

Could that be a picture of a proto? I can't imagine that ANY company worth its salt would produce a knife with the nail nick positioned so poorly. I'm not totally turned off by the knife as a whole but that nick is pretty obscene.

With exception to the obvious goofs....I like it. A Scagel style folder without a hole in the blade! I'll take it!

Both swedges run over the nail nick. The reproduction nick looks wider to me than the original, and without seeing the same profile of the original I would have to say the reproduction as a whole looks a little more blocky, but all in all I think they did a good job of getting the spirit of it right.

Now they both look as ugly as homemade bowling shoes to me, but I never "got" Scagel anyway, I just don't think it's fair to pick on the reproduction for being flawed when the original clearly inspired the "defect".

The original looks flat or convex ground, not saber ground. The reproduction has an extra pin, and the shield is inlaid, instead of tacked on like Scagel did. I had not seen that old Scagel before, the reproduction doesn't look too bad. It's still kinda ugly, but it's closer to looking like a Scagel than I thought.

Without getting into vendors, I looked at a few pics of the ones available and they don't all seem to have the nail nick in the same spot. For example :

Found another picture that I believe was one of the prototypes. I thumbnailed it because it's pretty big at full resolution, 1800x1350. Click for fullsize.

Not sure exactly what it is that appeals to me about the knife but there's something.

I like it, it has a lot of charm, but not for that sort of money...likewise I never got the whole "scagel" appeal, nice to know I'm not the only one.

I like what Derrick (KSF) and Bark River are doing with the Scagel name. I'm a fan of Bark River fixed blades so I've naturally been eyeing this and the other latest Scagel slip joints. This knife for whatever reason doesn't really call to me. I wouldn't mind trying one of those Fruitports or Barehead Jacks out for a while though.

I love it. It looks like a little strong tank of a pocket knife.

I'd really like to see some more scale options. Maybe some plain old bone like the Fruitport gets, or a Spyderco Leafstorm-ish translucent G10. I'm going to wait and see if there's any different handle choices after a while, but this one's a getter I reckon. I think the stag will make this unnecessarily heavy and a much thinnner scale would lighten it up some.

I have some other handle materials coming. These were made by Queen and finished at Bark River. The blade is thicker than the original.

They are not as blocky in real life as in the pic. I think they are pretty cool.

At least I was excited about them. :)
