Anyone seen this before?

So I stripped my 3-Mil, gave it a quick polish.

Noticed something strange on the blade and wanted to see if anyone who stripped theirs had seen this as well?

I could not see this of course when the coating was on it but there are two small lines that run up on both sides in the middle then intersect and spread away again towards the tip of the blade. I did not try and totally polish it out along with some of the machine lines because I wanted to share. It’s the in the same spot on both sides of the blade.

*Disclaimer* I have no problem with this, I only wanted to know if someone had encountered this before. It looks like it would polish out with some elbow grease.

Onto the pics;

Thanks!

Bare metal does funky stuff ... no big deal .... ,I am not much on a polished blade,I strip and wipe a light coat of cold blue on it or patina and run with the natural character of the blade ..

Probably due to our fixturing processes. No harm to the blade though. We had a Junglas that had a similar mark due to fixturing.

i noticed jgon's stripped junglas has a similar one but a rectangular shaped.

Interesting, Just want to subscribe to this thread to see what is said re: this.

I haven't stripped any of my Esee's yet but plan on doing so when the coating wears down. It was your review on that same Esee-3 mil that made me feel like "ooh I have to get 1" it arrived on monday has a clip point but no serrations.

Thanks TTD, I generally dont strip blades so it was weird to see. Its not a big deal to me either I will patina it later this week. It just seemed odd, like a big cats eye on the blade.

I figured it was something simple. For sure no harm to the blade, this lady sees a fair amount of cutting. Just the day before she helped me install another table at the cardroom I work at.

Those are intergalaxial radiant lines.
When the mother ship arrives, your knife will point in the proper direction for embarking.
Really a neat feature.

:p

I figured it was a hamon line at first glance.
One of my Swamp Rats (differentially tempered) looked similarly perfect when I stripped it.

can you show us the whole knife now? i'm tempted to strip my 3MIL now that I've seen yours. :p

I'll try and get one up today, I have been going back and forth with the canvas/linen scales. For the next few days it's Linen :)

That's the wear indicator. When the edge of the blade gets to that line, you need a new knife.

Hey Tex,

is there any chance that the bluing chemical could effect food prep? how does everyone feel about a little coating in their steak?

Blueing not painting , you are oxidizing the steel using acid. Once it is blued there is no more acid on the blade . wash it throughly dry and over time should be harmless ; It is basically the same as a patina, only more consistent and controlled. Blueing was the first form of blade coating and has been around for hundreds of years.

This is my own opinion only

cool. any particular brand? I'll be trying this post haste

the paint question was kind of separate. I wont let teflon or coated pans in my kitchen but still use coated blades sometimes and was just throwing it out there.
