I shave with a straight razor that's 120 years old. The only legitimate expense I have is good shaving cream. Even when the razor is in need of a bit of honing the shave is 1000% more comfortable, and I don't get ingrown hairs at the corners of my mouth anymore - something that happened almost every time when using Mach XVIII or whatever number I left off at...
Is there a learning curve? Yeah. Is it really that big of a deal? No. Do most guys that straight razor shave make too big of a deal out of the 'process' and require all sorts of products and procedures? Yep. Don't get sucked in to it. Just shave!
