Not really sure where I'm going with this - over the holiday found a box that had been sitting for 30+ years with my late grandfathers pipe collection - mostly Dunhills and Peterson's and 5 beautifully carved Meerschaums. I was just blown away.

They need a good cleaning and I think I'll do my grandpa proud and restore them and maybe take them up in his honor. I didnt know too much about him let alone that he smoked pipes so this made me really happy :)

Brought a few in good condition back with me to the city and just smoked one today - it was my first time smoking a pipe and I really liked it (I smoke a cigar about once a week and no cigarettes). Visited the neighborhood smoke shop, learned the art of packing/lighting, and bought a few of the different "flavors."

Seems like a fun and interesting endeavor even though I look pretty silly with a pipe :D Seems like the practice is getting more rare - cant remember seeing more than a handful of men w pipes on the streets over the years and most of them were older.

Any of you guys enjoy smoking pipes? Have a favorite tobacco?

This is the Peterson and Dunhill I brought back with me:

We tear it up with Meerschaums on a regular basis here at INFI Central. . . .

Don't forget that cigar and pipe smokers live an average of 3-5 years longer than NON-smokers!!!!   :D

Time for a little vitamin "C" . . . . . gar ! ! ! ! ! !

I must really be buzzing because I'm seeing double!! :D

I have one of those "water pipes" (gasp) but that's something altogether different... ;)

i love to relax with a cold pabst, hot pipe and something easy on the eye's.

My father smoked a pipe for 30 years filled with Captain Black all day long. Never minded the smell. Actualy smelled kind of good, though I hate the smell of ciggarets.
He just quit about 6 months ago, and I am happy he did.

Pipes are a great companion, while camping alone in the wilderness. I prefer Navy flake tobacco, by Samuel Gawith's. true navy flake, has a touch of rum in it:D

Would you laugh at me if I confessed I loved a pipe full of Captain Black Gold now and then?

I used to know how to clean an old pipe. It involves salt (I forget if it's table salt or kosher or sea) and everclear (or Bacardi 151) and I BELIEVE (don't quote me) boiling the stem then buffing it on a cotton wheel to bring the black back out.

IIRC, there are places online to get this done. Not much per pipe - esp. if you've got a vintage Dunhill.

I haven't smoked a pipe in years - not like some of the pipesmokers (giggle) here. Too much work. Gimme a cigar.

Im taking notes on all the tobaccos mentioned :D

Spoke with a gentleman at Barclay-Rex here in NYC - they have a pipe reamer/cleaner in on mondays so I'll bring a bunch in then to have the pro look at them.

Tomorrow I'm going to pick up a sampler pack of more flavors - rum sounds awesome :D

I got my wife to take a puff of the captain black royal and she said it wasnt too bad - she wants to try vanilla and cherry

raven's worth, north sea are good smoke, and avaible at your local shop(if not don't deal with then).

too clean an old pipe: fir e the pipe to a smooth smoke , then scrape lightly. removing the charr. fire again, then let sit at least fortyeight hour's. scrape once more, then enjoy.

I smoked a hooka pipe quite a bit when I was in Iraq...that flavored tobacco was pretty good.
