I was browsing the NRA store website today and ran across this little number:

http://www.nrastore.com/nra/Product.aspx?productid=KV 22216

They call it a battle ax, but it's a nessmuk style double-bit if I've ever seen one. What do you guys think? For $30 I'm thinking of picking one up next time I've got a little spare change and trying it out. Anyone already have one, or have held/used one, and want to share?

It has similar dimensions to the Marbles axe. It would be like trying to do "battle" with a toy.

This is the same as the marbles axe and the same as another one that I've seen in sportsmansguide. I think they're all from the same factory in China, and it just depends what branding is put on them. That being said, there are a few less than stellar reviews of the marbles version of this over in the axes subforum. Several people had the head fly off after their first couple of chops with the axe.

I was thinking about getting one, but it's been making it's way to the bottom of my list as I find other stuff.

The head is pretty heavy and the swell before the head makes it really head heavy but it swings more like a club than an axe.

Looks like the Marbles double-bit to me.
I've had one of the Marbles double-bits for about a year, yes they are small but they actually chop well.(not great but well).

So far the head on mine is on tight and secure although some here have had problems with the head coming off.
Drill a hole and put in a pin and you won't have to worry about losing your head, lol!
I recently scored a small Norlund double-bit (in the for-sale forum).
Its slightly bigger than the marbles.
I've rehandled it but i need to do some fine-tuning before i can really use it.
The Condor double-bit looks really interesting as well, the only thing that is a turn off for me is its weird permanent metal wedge.
I think until i can afford a Reeves Double bit i'll be satisfied with my Marbles and Norlund!
:D

I already had a Wetterling and Fiskars single bits before i got the Marbles.
They work better and the single bit design is probably more practical (its harder to hammer with a double bit).
If you are going to buy just one small axe/hatchet you are probably better off with a single bit.
But..... double bits just look way cooler lol!
Now that Custom Reeves double bit looks like the king of the DBs!
I'm just waiting for someone to post a pic of one in this thread so i can drool over it!
lol!

14" length kind of turns me off
Too short or too long?
The Marbles balance feels fine to me, the head is not too heavy for the handle length.
For me i don't really like hatchets under 10 - 12 inches OAL.
I have a 8 inch Gerber Packaxe that just feels wrong to me.
However the same head size on the 14 inch Fiskars seems just right.

I had a couple of Chinese made Marbles axes, and the were truly crap. Poor edge geometry, poor quality wood, and the heads on both were deeply rusted right out of the box.

My advice to to avoid at all costs. :thumbdn:

:D 440 Stainless kind of turns me off. Who ever heard of a stainless axe? :D
Yeah i know. Thats what made me think twice about the Condor axes....
But really haven't heard anything bad about the Condors.
My Marbles isn't stainless for sure.
I don't know maybe there are a lot of lemons floating around and i fluked into one of the good Marbles?
