anyone out there use a folding knife, in conjunction with a larger chopping blade? or axe?

Been playing with combos lke that for a good bit....I like 'em a bunch

what about you guys?

let see some pics...

For the most part it depends on what I'm doing. If I'm hunting I'll usual take a hunting blade 3 1/2 - 4", a folder like a spyderco caly 3.5 and say an esee 6 for splitting chopping if necessary. If I'm camping I'll take a Himalayan imports Khukuri, a caly 3.5 folder and something smaller like a bark river rising wolf. If I'm just going for a walk a folder and esee 6

You might check out the Nessmuk thread. Lots of people have their combos up there. I personally have my Delica 4, BHK Boat Tail Scandi, and a Wetterlings 10" Axe.

God bless,
Adam

My combo is my HI Khuk and a 4" fixed blade

I'm also working on another set that'll be a tomahawk and a 4" fixed blade

Nothing against folder I just love my fixed blades. I have been thinking about a more "tactical" combo just to have for fun. Which would be the ZT0560 I have preordered and some kind of fighting tomahawk. I think I'd be a cool combo just for looking at invade of a zombie apocolypse

no pics but my trailmaster and my orange military spydie are what is usually on me when I am up in the Cariboo on my acreage or crashing bush in crown land. After packing a large limbing/chopping knife whenever I have only 4 or 5in fixed blade I feel underknifed for my usages in trail clearing or fire building.

Lately when I am dayhiking locallyI have been strapping my Helle Laplander on the pack, with the full tooled sheath it is people friendly and does not look combat oriented. Does a good job on all the salmonberry/blackberry bushes that are constantly trying to take over a lot of trails around here. That big 8.5 in scandi is really growing on me.

In more serious bush for a couple years have been trading out the trailmaster once and awhile for my Koster Survivor or a 10in blade kukri, gurka house not HI unfortunately but it does the job. If not the millie a rat-1 or lawman is the folder.

I'm toying with the idea. Right now I'm using an ESEE Izula II and a CS Trail Hawk but i've been thinking about going with a SAK instead. The places I camp require going through multiple jurisdictions to get there and a fixed blade EDC is just a liability. Also, I really don't need a fixed blade for anything except the "oh no my gear fell into the river and all I have is this knife" scenario.

The military is a great knife. One of the best folders to use as a paring knife IMO.

Shotgun, I;ve been using a sak ( victorinox lock back field master) the old school ones not theone handed jobs, every day fo the past 3 years... it is a dynamite blade.

I have a Fehrman Final Judgement with the Fehrman Thru Hiker piggy backed on it. But my Strider SMF is in my pocket always too. Most days its a 4inch BHK bushcrafter on my hip and my Strider, with a saw in my pack. When a chopper is on me its the Fehrman setup though.

My SAK Electrician Plus and a small fire kit ride in a little pouch on the sheath of my modded 12" Ontario machete which I carry on a braided 550 cord balmoral rig. If it's more than a day hike then my BG Andrews bushie gets a ride on there or my belt.I'm good for just about anything with that set up. Sometimes I'll throw a Silky Pocket Boy in my pack,--KV

If the axe won't get the job done, he'll use the horn to blow the trees down!

I really enjoyed the cartoon! :)

I sold the GB mini and some fishing gear about 2 weeks ago, needs must as they say... :(

It was such a handy size (could fit in a jacket pocket), was proper sharp and could chop surprisingly well.

This was cleared with the mini and a small forest axe.

The only reason why I sold it and kept my small forest axe is because if I ever really need a chopper, then it's better to have something bigger rather than smaller.

In the future I'd like to try a Cold Steel shovel, I reckon it would come in handy for some of the places I go fishing.

I've been toying with the idea of selling my mini. It just doesn't see the use it deserves. It's just so pretty. :D

Yorkshire Boy,

The pocket axes can really chop out of their size. They are impressive little things. The CS shovel is a nice little piece, but I fear for the lifespan of mine. I just recently got it. It digs insanely well in soil/dirt. I hit a rock with it and it left a nice ding rather easily. It does double as a chopper though. It's first job was digging up a sapling for a walking staff. I used the shovel to chop off the roots (mostly between 1 and 2 inches in diameter, did great.)

As a result of my findings with the CS Shovel, I been looking at Predator Tools. I'm considering getting the Model 58 and chopping it down to the same OAL as the CS.

God bless,
Adam

The GB Mini and Vic Farmer make a nice combo.
