Anyone use a Nimravus??

If you have trouble locking the thumblock all the way closed on that Kydex sheath, holler at me. There's a quick fix.

Also, watch for grit (even new in box!!!!) inside the Kydex. It'll scratch the coating up right away.

I have that exact prob with the thumlock mate! On both my Nim and BM rescue.

Whats the fix??

Yeah, I should have it on friday, or even thursday. But Its goning to be quite the knife, Highest production knife I'll own. In other words I cannot wait! :D

I've become something of a Nimravus expert since it is my favorite knife design. Here's a few tidbits:

The overall design has been changed twice; the larger finger groove is evidence of this
So far the knife has come with 4 different sheaths:
1) old Kydex - the best I've seen. This has a snap closure.
2) old Kydex with carbon fiber - not bad but doesn't hold the blade as snugly
3) new Kydex - horrible redesign and I've never seen anyone prefer this. This is the one with the thumblock that never works quite right
4) Codura Molle-compatible sheath - number 2 in my opinion but available in different colors. Digital camo is sweet. I forget if this has a velcro closure; velcro can be noisy in a tactical situation...

There are 2 or 3 versions of scales, depending on the age of the knife. The G10 scales are lighter than the newer aluminum version and put the balance more blade-forward. They also are much better in very cold weather. The aluminum scales are more durable and have a great grippy feeling because of their opposing groove construction. The aluminum scales are available in green on the military version (has ADC in model number) and red on the trainer version. The G10 scales come standard black but desert brown on another military version. All military-oriented versions have the ComboEdge (partially serrated).

Blade Steels that have been used:
ATS34 originally and 154CM is standard. M2 version came out and these are very hard to find. D2 is now used as the alternative offering since Benchmade discontinued the use of M2 steel. I believe the Nimravus Cub, shorter and also discontinued, was only offered in ATS34 or 154CM.

When deciding between the partially serrated or plain edge I've found the best rule of thumb is this: if you are equipping the knife to use only occasionally then go with the ComboEdge. If you expect to use the knife on a regular basis you will be happier with the plain edge. Some versions of the knife only come with the ComboEdge. The prototypes and first production run have ComboEdge.

Hope that helps. If anyone has an M2 version they want to sell, please let me know.

Up to there I was agreing with ya. Personally Ive gotten into the serrated edges. I've found my self cutting alot more rope and diffrent ties or needing things cut fast. Deffinetly when I'm back in NS I'll need the serrations, alot of canooing and generally more use of ropes and what not. either way, I've found my self craving serrations. Any large splitting is done with an axe, so im good.

I kindly like the Kydex sheath although, since you did say "prefer", I can;t compare it to the other Nim sheaths since I've never used one. The thumblock, now, can be fixed.............

The problem exists not in the thumblock, but in the Nimravus blade at the ramp. The ramp has to be filed down so that the thumblock can close properly. I learned that from someone here on BladeForums.

I started to file it down but soon decided it was going to take way too long. So I put a miniature drum sander in the Dremel and very slightly ground down the serrated ramp. Careful! It doesn;t take much!! I don;t know what would happen if you over-ground it because I avoided that! ((( :D )))

This modification has the effect of making the ramp more palatable to the thumb and also allows the thumblock to close fully and lock. I just ground it a hair at a time, continually re-trying the knife in sheath and thumblock action, until it was just right.

Now the sheath will lock. With enough force you can still unsheath the knife without unlocking, but it takes quite a bit. I generally avoid doing that... I just did it a few times so I was aware that it could be withdrawn.

Yeah...I kindly like that Kydex sheath.... :)

i have a new nimravus that i just purchased...but its soft sheath is crappy compared to the old soft sheath (same design, just worse quality) and there is no exposed tang for indexing!!! What is happening? im so confused! its the same as the one that i already have but so much different! does anyone know if i was sent an older discontinued model, or a screw up???????

It reminds me of a BM fixed I had about 10 years ago...but mine didn't have those slots in the handle and I didn't think the scales were aluminum. Nice little knife, handled most tasks fine but at the time was just a little too small for my tastes, I mainly got it to be a "discrete-carry" knife at work.

I got a Nim in M2. Awesome blade shape and steel to boot. But it hurts my hands if using it for too long. After a few hours it gets a little rough. I don't like that the tang sticks out past the handle slabs. The spine starts to rub ya raw after a while. Other than that... it's a wonderful knife.

three year old thread? ok... whatever.

when they first came out i liked the looks, but then i got to handle one and simply did not like the handle. haven't paid any attention to them since then. if you like it, great, but it's not a knife i want to spend time with.

and regarding the BM coatings, i have an early AFCK with Ti liners and a coated blade. it was my EDC for quite a while and the coating wore at the edges and corners of the blade but still looks great... it just has a little more character now. IMHO, they ruined the balance of the AFCK when they dropped the Ti liners for stainless.

i've never had to deal with BM's warranty department... can't offer any input one way or the other on that.

Wow old thread. I still have yet to see the Niv with out coating lol. I handled one and I think that it would still make a decent woods knife. I didnt have any issues with handle.

funny, I forgot about this, yeah have had the knife for a long time now. Still use it once in a while, will dig up some photos? :)

I'll chime in to state that I can't stand that the scales are smaller than the tang. Hot spot city. :(

how would u remove the coating? does anyone have any pics of one with out the coating...

i removed the coating on mine with 600 grit sandpaper and it looks great. i would post a pic but, my computer is being a pos.:jerkit:

The thumb ramp was the only hot spot for me. That dang thing hurt under constant woodworking use.

Professor.
