Anyone use chopsticks in the bush?

I like chopsticks for the outdoors.I lost my utensil set on a multi day hike one year.I improvised a set of chopsticks and didn't miss a single meal.

Hushnel I love that idea.I'm gonna try to work that into my next set. Thanks for sharing.

I use them all the time. Shave down a couple sticks and good to go. Into the fire when done. They double as tools to spear my sausages or lift pots or rake coals.

Now I usually use one of my Ti sporks, especially the folding ones, because they makes me feel more manly using titanium...I'm a sad, little man. Actually I seem to have some weird obsession with camping utensils as I'm always buying new ones when I find something cooler.

A.G.Russell. MY-TI™ Titanium Flatware

Saw a dude making some G11 ones, glow in the dark I believe, on the makers side. I really want a pair of those.

G11 Chopsticks with Ironwood by Phillip Dobson. I got two sets. :)

They don't glow in the dark, though, but they have a warm, soft feel to them and a square cross-section.

I use chopsticks at home and in the bush as much as possible... easier to clean & better for picking things up than a fork.

On a side note...

Mike- who made that edc scandi of yours? I really like that one. I think you mentioned it in a thread a while back, but I had forgotten about it til now.

That one was completed by yours truly. I based it on a 'cobbler's knife' blank from Ragweed Forge. I wish Ragnar still carried those blanks!

All the best,

- Mike

Nice work! It's a real beauty. I'll have to keep an eye out for those blanks.

In short: Yes!

Sometimes I even bring some along; those were made by Phillip Dobson (he's a knifemaker member here on BF - heck of a nice guy!) in G11:

I whittled chopsticks now and then, but just as often I'd whittle a small fork. :) Basically just find a small forked branch of the right shape (3 tines usually) and whittle/peel off the bark.

Hey Loosearrow, did you learn this from Bear Grylls? :D

Awhile ago, I thought about the utility of making and using chop sticks in the bush, so I have been practising using them ever since. Another factor is the ease of cleaning after use as compared to a fork.

Also, they can be used to pick up something dirty or hot, or otherwise uninviting to handle by hand.

Naw, but I now pee on my t shirt and squeeze dog poo for protein from worms. Ha. I must pay attention to my quick spelling. Regards

Thats a good idea Hushnel has. Multiple duties. Fire tinder, candle, chopsticks, with the amount of resin in them you can probably wash and reuse. I had no idea others really used them.

Use them all the time, in the woods and out. I only carry a heavy plastic spoon and a pair of very nice bamboo chopsticks. Chris
