Anyone use hammocks for camping instead of tent/sleeping bag?

A handgun works well against everything from wild dogs to wild people. Sounds like you need one.

I think you just need to get in touch with nature. :) Grateful Dead will help... so will some John Denver.

Im kidding but serious. :) It might help to jsut spend some quiet time in the woods. I suggest going on a day hike and taking about 30-60 minutes to simply sit and listen. Just enjoy the woods. Then hike a bit more and stop and take a nap. Im being serious. It sounds like you just need a bit more time in the field and time to really get comfortable with being "out there".

And I agree with the sentiment that I will take my chances with the critters WAY more than with people! :)

Anyone got an opinion on the Grand Trunk Skeeter Beater hammock?

I'd love to get a Henesey or Warbonnet setup, but honestly I don't think I can swing the price any time soon.

Sorry, I completely missed this post - yes, skeeter beater is a very nice choice for the price. The lines might tend to tangle a bit, and it's not quite as spacious or easy to get a comfortable pitch as the expensive models, but it's a fine choice if you're on a budget.
