Anyone use their customs or more expensive knives?

I use all of my knives. Including my Busse. I won't own a knife I am afraid to use. There are some I use more than others, but I do use them all.

For example... I used my Busse ASH-1 as a steak knife the other day.

My wife thinks I have "issues." I prefer to call them "tendencies."

Two presumptions here;
1. We are motal
2. We like knifes
So it ought to be natural that we enjoy our life while we can (can anyone guarantee he or she will still be alive 24 hours later?) by collecting and experiencing knifes we like.

IMO for me to buy a knife and not use it would be entirely pointless (nothing against collecting, I just collect to use).
And if I ever pay $500+ for a knife, it better be used more than all the others.

I'd never buy a knife that was so expensive that I'd be affraid to use it.

Therefore everything I have is automatically a user.

(that said my most expensive knife is an $100 one and after that my LeathermanTTi which is MADE to be used...but still)

I use 'em - Randall, SnG, Buck Mayo, whatever. They are a tool first, and investment is just a gamble. Provenance and patina, however, are generally guaranteed to add value. If Gunny Hathcock had carried a Gerber MKII, it would be worth a lot more than any other used Gerber.

All I have to do is sit back and wait for the collectors to appreciate me and bid up my junk knives.

Safe queens are not always a good investment with a guaranteed return. Either the style of knife gets outlawed, the materials made illegal, or the maker dies, before any substantial appreciation can happen. But you can use one and experience what the maker really meant in a tool.

Driving an exotic car is worth a lot more than worshipping it in a garage. Buy one and use it. The next owner will appreciate it because they won't be afraid to.

My EDC is a custom that cost me $600, and that was discounted because I paid cash upfront when I ordered it (I trusted the maker pretty well).

I think it's fine to use an expensive knife, but the key is to choose very carefully and not flit from one hi-dollar knife to another. If you do, before you know it you'll have 2 or 3 thousand dollars worth of knives, only one of which you use, and you can't sell the rest for anywhere near what you've paid, because they all have minor wear & scratches from being EDC'ed. Not a major disaster, but not very smart either.

That describes perfectly me! I sold all my expensive knives just because I never used them and lost money. I kept only my Dozier folder, 600$ worth. I am using it to the max, for light and heavy tasks. It was hard the first time but now it feel soooo good to carry it and it's such a pleasure to use it. The dirtier it is after skinning the better I feel. And it goes wherever I go.

Daily driving of an exotic car is prohibitively expensive for anyone who cant buy one with a suitcase full of cash. There are lots of people who can afford them but simply cant afford to drive them into the ground which is sort of what we do with our beater knives, and so they use the cars occasionally, such as for a weekend drive, a gumball style ralley, a track day, or going into town on a special occasion.

I cant afford to replace my best knives right now, so for now, they stay unused.

Randalls, Sebenzas, Buck Mayo TNT and some limited editions I have all get used. IMHO, I tend to appreciate the knife and the cost when I can see just what I paid for (i.e. how well it cuts, handles, etc.)
